Four Pivotal Trends Augmenting Fish Protein Hydrolysates Industry Growth

Fish and other foods derived from marine sources, such as fish protein hydrolysates, are among the most essential natural sources of protein for human consumption. Recent shift in people’s perception towards health and well-being has brought about major changes in dietary patterns. More and more people from all age groups are looking to boost their intake of protein and omega-3 fatty acids.

A protein-rich diet boosts metabolism and lowers calorie intake and cravings. A 12-month study with 130 overweight participants on a calorie-restricted diet revealed that the group with high-protein diet lost 53% more fat than a group with normal-protein diet consuming the same number of calories. A large obese population and growing consumer preference towards quick absorbing protein solutions has increased the consumption of fish protein hydrolysates.

Reports estimate that global fish protein hydrolysate market size will be worth more than US$570 million by the end of 2026. However, shutdown orders from governments in many countries fighting the coronavirus pandemic is likely to restrict the industry growth up to some extent.

Explained below are a few notable trends expected to influence the consumption of fish protein hydrolysates in the near future.

• Strong demand for cost-effective protein-rich foods

Acid hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis are two commonly used technologies to produce fish protein hydrolysates. Acid hydrolysis is a comparatively cost-effective method of protein hydrolysis and results into a higher yield, which is necessary to meet the burgeoning consumer demand for affordable and high-quality products.

Meanwhile, enzymatic hydrolysis technology segment is projected to exceed US$74 million by 2026. Manufacturers are significantly investing in research and development and adopting innovative and effective marketing strategies.

• Wide use of sardine protein hydrolysates in cat food

Fish protein hydrolysates from sardines is prominently used in cat food due to the odor, sharp taste, and compatibility with several products. Today, most pet owners are willing to spend substantially high-quality pet nutrition products. In humans, the product is known to improve vision and digestive health and minimize the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Tilapia pastes are also an excellent source to obtain fish protein hydrolysates. Easy availability of these pastes, high concentration of omega-3, and a cost-effective extraction process makes them suitable in pet food formulations. Liquid fish protein hydrolysate industry share will grow at a CAGR of 3% through 2026.

• Growing trend of natural and organic cosmetics in APAC

Asia Pacific fish protein hydrolysates industry size is estimated to reach US$205 million by 2026. With a notable uptick in people’s income levels, consumers are increasingly spending on cosmetics and personal care products. Majority of the people are switching to cosmetic products with natural and organic ingredients.

The use of fish protein hydrolysates as an additive in cosmetic formulations enhances the skin’s natural defense against oil, dirt, pollution, and other environmental factors. Keeping up with the organic trend, many regional cosmetic brands are incorporating alternative natural ingredients, including fish protein hydrolysates, in beauty and grooming products.

• Significant rise in marine fisheries and aquaculture

The first and foremost step in fish protein hydrolysates production is the analysis of major fishing sources. Raw materials for the production of fish protein hydrolysates can be both fish and fish leftovers.

In 2016, China, followed by Indonesia, the U.S., and the Russian Federation were the leading producers of marine fisheries, according to the UN FAO. In addition, China accounted for 45.5 million tons of aquaculture, which is equivalent to more than 60% of the global farmed fish production, followed by India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Egypt.
