The not-for-profit community medical center is partnering with Glytec to facilitate standardization of best practices in diabetes therapy management.
With as many as half of critical care patients either diagnosed with diabetes or at risk of hyperglycemia while hospitalized, Northeast Georgia Medical Center, in partnership with Glytec, is taking advanced measures to optimize glycemic management and ensure the safety and efficacy of insulin therapy. “Our organization is steadfastly committed to clinical excellence in diabetes care and glycemic management,” says Dr. Suhel Patel, Medical Director and Chair, Inpatient Medicine, Northeast Georgia Physicians Group. “By adopting the Glytec suite of technologies and services, our patients will receive insulin therapy that is personalized to their individual needs and carefully designed to support their recovery and transitions of care.”
Data from more than 150,000 annual patient encounters and more than 65 studies have shown that Glytec’s eGlycemic Management System® results in faster times to target glucose levels and lower incidence of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia when compared to usual care comprising static protocols.
“Challenges surrounding insulin therapy are well documented in the medical literature, and as a high-alert medication, considerable safety precautions are imperative,” explains Cindy Danner, Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville Campus. “We are confident the eGlycemic Management System® will elevate our nurses’ ability to deliver the very best care to every patient and will remove many of the difficulties and demands posed by manual processes. We also anticipate the system will increase staff satisfaction and engagement.”
Implementation of the eGlycemic Management System® will be governed by the health system’s Diabetes Core Team, a multidisciplinary glycemic steering committee led by Patel. “Our Diabetes Core Team was instrumental in the decision to partner with Glytec,” says Patel, “and our Diabetes Program Manager, Hannah Day, who directed the value analysis process, will be a key facilitator in getting the eGlycemic Management System® up and running.”
Members of Glytec’s Clinical Services and Quality Initiatives teams will work with Northeast Georgia Medical Center to tailor glycemic management workflows and order sets. They will also configure an analytics program around key performance indicators consistent with desired outcomes and targeted improvements.
“This is a significant initiative for our nursing organization,” says Danner, “Insulin is one of the most prescribed therapies in the inpatient setting, and we are excited by the many benefits of Glytec’s technology-enabled approach.”
