Nuance, as a partner and member of the Meditech Alliance Program, enhances Expanse EHR by providing workflow assistance and documentation tools to alleviate clinician burnout and enhance patient care. The addition of DAX Copilot builds on Nuance and Meditech’s collaboration, which includes previous integration with Dragon Medical One speech recognition software, recognized as Best in KLAS for four consecutive years.
Dragon Medical enables clinicians to update patient and clinical information using voice commands and access patient data in EHRs, while DAX Copilot allows healthcare organizations to implement AI-powered clinical documentation applications on a broader scale. Through the use of generative artificial intelligence and ambient speech recognition technologies during patient visits, doctors can eliminate manual data entry and immediately review automated clinical documentation in Meditech EHR.
Robert Dahdah, corporate vice president of global health and life sciences at Microsoft, noted that Microsoft-backed generative AI enhances Meditech’s investment in Dragon Medical.
Nuance initially introduced its AI virtual assistance for healthcare technology in 2017, while Meditech, a prominent EHR developer, has explored various AI initiatives and partnerships in recent years. In 2021, Meditech partnered with Google to incorporate advanced natural language processing and large language models into its EHR. The company has also integrated conversational AI into its virtual assistant to automate tasks and support clinical decision-making.
Nuance’s DAX Copilot was integrated into Epic EHRs in January, following a successful testing phase.Clinicians noted a notable decrease in administrative workload and enhanced workflow efficiency with the availability of the genAI tool.
Brent Lamm, chief information officer of UNC Health, highlighted how DAX Copilot enhances the role of Epic EHR in clinical documentation, making it intuitive and seamless.
Jeff Kimball, Meditech’s associate vice president, emphasized that DAX Copilot aligns with Meditech’s strategy to drive innovation, improve physician and patient experiences, and enhance clinical efficiency and outcomes.
