3 PR Tips for Remote Work

Remote work schedules are becoming more and more common. Technology has taken the world by storm, and the ability to log on and work remotely has become something that’s not just a rare occurrence but a viable option for many workers, even in the public relations industry.

Even though working from home is a sought out option for many people, if you’re relatively new to this type of work, then you may take some adjusting to the lifestyle. Perhaps the flexibility seemed too good to be true, and you couldn’t wait to get started, only to realize that time still goes by faster than you want it to. Maybe you’re feeling a little out of touch or not as motivated. If this is where you fall when it comes to working remotely in PR, then read on for a few tips to help you get the work-life balance at home on par and see why everyone enjoys this lifestyle so much.

  1. Put Your Best Foot Forward

In the public relations industry, whether you’re in a hybrid workplace or fully remote, you’ll still need a schedule. Flexibility doesn’t mean schedules fly out the window; it just allows you to restructure your current schedule to better suit your new needs to be more productive. You need to be able to connect with your customers and network during the typical working hours so you don’t miss opportunities.

Working in your pajamas might be comfortable, but doesn’t look good when you have to take a quick video call with a news organization. Always be ready to look your best and be the face of the company. Also, getting ready for the day helps with motivation and getting rid of that sleepy feeling if you went straight from bed to the desk. There is a mind-shift that happens when you get fresh clothes on and pull yourself together for a job. This doesn’t mean you have to be decked out to the nines or wear heels while working, but it does mean being clean, having fresh clothes, and good hygiene will help you feel ready to tackle the day and take those unexpected video chats.

Not only should you look your best, but when you are home your space needs to look presentable. Keep your background simple if you can. You want to limit distractions for you or others if you are doing an interview or video call.

  1. Get Out Into the Community

The beauty of working from home is the flexibility it offers. You don’t have to feel chained to your desk but should get out into the community. It will help your company by putting some positive actions behind the name. You can host your own local event or offer to sponsor one that is already set up. Whatever you do, make sure to connect with your target market by live-streaming the event or posting on your social channels.

  1. Embrace Technology

Technology has totally changed everything about public relations. There is the ability to do a video chat with anyone anywhere. You can talk to news organizations, your customers or business collaborators. Also, social media has created a way to connect to your community and customers unlike ever before. The internet is a treasure trove to earn your customer’s trust. You can display positive reviews about your company on your website or deem yourself an expert in your industry through blogging. All of these examples can be completed at home, even if you are working with other companies to accomplish all of this. The technology allows you to communicate efficiently to get the job done.

Working from home is a job most people wish they could do, and if you’re offered the chance to take on a remote position in the public relations industry, chances are you’ll be over the moon. Don’t think that the job can’t be done at home. Through getting up and looking nice, embracing opportunities in the community and taking advantage of technology, you can be successful.
