4 Beneficial Vitamins for Kids

As a parent, chances are you’re always thinking about ways to ensure your child is happy, healthy, and safe. When it comes to health, there are so many ways to go about it. Typically there’s a focus on plenty of physical activity, quality sleep each night, and a balanced diet.

However, if you have specific concerns, learning more about vitamins and supplements will serve you well. Not only can they fill in any dietary blanks, but they can go a long way in improving your child’s health and vitality. Here are four beneficial vitamins to consider for your child and how to go about including them in the diet.

1. Vitamin D

When it comes to your children’s overall health, looking out for their immune system should be at the top of your list. Fortunately, giving it a boost is easier than you might think — as long as you go about it properly.

For instance, maybe you’ve taken your child for a routine checkup where a routine blood panel was run, and you’re told that vitamin D levels are low. While hearing that anything is not within the normal range can be upsetting, it’s important to keep your focus and research how to increase vitamin D levels quickly.

While you can find vitamin D in supplement form, don’t forget about how it occurs naturally in some foods. Spending time outside in the sunshine is also very important and will allow your child’s body to produce the D it needs for a stronger immune system, healthy bones, and overall better sense of well-being.

2. Zinc

It’s no surprise that kids grow quickly, and making sure your child has the proper nutrients to support this incredible rate of growth is essential.

While every vitamin has its proper place, zinc is a star player in terms of growth and development. Proper amounts of zinc are critical to brain development and function. It also has wonderful immune-boosting benefits, which is a must, especially during cold and flu season.

Supplementing with zinc in lozenge or pill form is an easy way to ensure your child is covered, but it’s also readily found in many everyday healthy foods as well. Make it a point to purchase and serve your child good-quality meat, dairy products, eggs, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

3. B Vitamins

Supplementing with B vitamins is another important piece of the health and nutrition puzzle. It can also be an ambiguous one, so doing plenty of research will help you gain a better understanding of what’s what.

There are several different B vitamins that are all necessary parts of a healthy diet. Everything from your child’s metabolism to the nervous system will benefit from proper intake.

In addition to choosing a supplement that includes these vitamins, serving plenty of poultry, eggs, fruits, and cheese will help ensure your child reaps the whole food benefits as well.

4. Iron

Just as with adults, a diet with adequate iron is incredibly important for children. In addition to blood health, iron is an essential part of building muscle.

While iron supplements aren’t typically advisable unless blood work shows a deficiency, it’s necessary to make sure you’re including iron-rich foods in your child’s diet. Foods such as beef, dark leafy greens, and beans are all excellent sources and very versatile as well.

Knowing the signs of anemia is important and can help you determine if your child may need additional iron in the diet. There are kid-specific multivitamins that contain iron as well, which is an easy solution especially for children who might be picky eaters. Use caution with iron supplements, however. Too much can be toxic to children

Keeping your child healthy will be an ongoing process, one that’s constantly changing and presenting new challenges and concerns. With an understanding of essential vitamins and what the body needs to stay healthy and strong, you’ll be one step ahead in achieving this goal.
