5 Tips for Surviving in a Tech-Savvy World

Technology surrounds us, and it is not going anywhere. Each day new advances and breakthroughs emerge to create technology to make life easier, more efficient and more enjoyable. Entertainment, health care, daily business and even cleaning are all being dramatically affected by these new creations. So how do we stay current on all of it? How do we navigate a world that has become tech-driven? While there is no one method to magically become tech-savvy overnight, here are a few critical pointers for surviving.

1. Save the Papers

Throwing away the box and packaging materials is probably the first thing you do, aside from excitedly putting your new tech device on the charger so you can use it as soon as possible. When doing so, be careful not to throw away any manuals, instructions or warranty cards that are in the box. This may seem like common sense, but it happens more than you would think. Register your device as soon as you can. This can provide you with detailed support, replacement parts and maybe even a brand-new device should yours stop working properly. After initial charging and set up, you may be tempted to toss the instructions or manual to save space or reduce clutter. Consider keeping them in an area dedicated to all of your tech manuals for future reference, as needed. For some products, these manuals can be found in their entirety online. When in doubt, look in the manual!

2. Rank

Do not be overwhelmed by the vast options that come with technology. First, look for choices that you need instead of those you want. Then, search for items that can help to make daily tasks easier, safer and more efficient. Technology such as Caller ID Spoofing and video doorbells help improve safety and can be great options for tech newbies. Try not to go overboard with too many new things all at once. Start small until you feel comfortable using that device or software, and then you can gradually add more tech into your life as you become more accustomed to using it.

3. Videos

There are YouTube videos on just about anything you can think of these days. Chances are, there are probably at least one, if not dozens or hundreds, of videos featuring tutorials for tech devices, shortcuts and how-to segments. These types of instructional videos and many other resources can help you navigate your way through confusing technology.

4. Ask

The simplest way to learn is to ask someone for advice, hints or guidance. You may opt to ask a technologically inclined child, grandchild or neighbor or you may seek help from tech support or customer service. Not knowing how something works or what the best option is for your needs is very common and nothing to be embarrassed about at all. In fact, others have probably posed similar questions.

5. Research

One great way to stay up to date on technology is to perform your own research. While researching tech can be overwhelming or hard to understand if the text is filled with a lot of jargon, it can be helpful. Even if you are not looking for product reviews, reading up on technology can help you to learn more about the tech world, advances and improvements. As with any research, be sure to vet your sources to choose a reputable and trustworthy reference. As you research, you may even find courses to teach you more about technology.
It is hard to escape technology in our daily lives. It is everywhere and incorporated into almost anything you can think of, from businesses to devices and so much more. While it has improved many areas, it may also cause stress, anxiety or confusion. The constant updates and advances can present a challenge when trying to become more familiar with the technology. If you feel like this, you are not alone. Do not be afraid to ask for help. As with any subject, there is always room to grow and more to learn.
