5 Valuable Benefits Offered to Veterans

If you are a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, you have spent years giving to and sacrificing for the American people. You risked your life, and in many cases, put personal endeavors on hold, like home ownership or schooling, to serve your country. The United States government and the whole country are indebted for your selflessness. When it’s time to step away from your uniform, there are many benefits offered to say “thank you” for your service. Take advantage of these five veteran’s benefits to get the next chapter of your life started off on the right foot.

Buying a Home

It can be difficult to buy a home when you are on active duty. Deployment and moving from one duty station to the next every one to three years makes putting down roots tricky. Now that you are back in the civilian world, buying a house may be included in the next stage of your life. The process of buying a home may seem expensive and complicated, but as a veteran, you won’t be left floundering as you take this important step.

A VA home loan is the perfect option for many veteran home buyers. If you qualify for this benefit, you can avoid a costly down payment on your house that discourages many would-be homebuyers. The loans also offer more credit flexibility, no PMI and a higher allowable DTI. If buying a home is in your future, don’t leave this valuable perk on the table.

Gaining an Education

After your time in the military, you may be considering further education to advance your career options. One of the most lucrative of the government benefits offered to military members and veterans is the G.I. Bill. Flip open any newspaper and the chances are high you will read something about the inflated cost of education in this country. The good news is, after your service, this doesn’t need to be a concern for you. The bill offers a monthly stipend for your college education, and even covers technical training. Don’t take too much time to decide whether schooling is for you, though. The G.I. Bill is only good for 15 years after your service completion.

Starting a Business

Just like buying a home and gaining an education, starting a business can be a very intimidating and expensive endeavor to tackle. If entrepreneurship is in your post-military future, there are benefits for that, as well. VA small business loans might be just the edge you need to launch a start-up. Loans up to five million dollars are available through this valuable program. Make your dream a reality today and talk to your bank to see if you qualify for this benefit.

Staying Mentally Healthy

It’s no secret that military service takes a toll on the mental health of active-duty members and veterans alike. If you find yourself struggling with depression or anxiety, even if you don’t feel it is connected to your service, seek out the free and low-cost counseling offered to members of the military family. Your mental health is as important as your physical health. You are not alone. Over 1.7 million veterans take advantage of this benefit every year.

Saving Money

The government isn’t the only organization hungry to try and repay you for all the sacrifices you have made. Hundreds of businesses and organizations offer goods or services at a discount, or even for free, to those who have put their life on the line for this country. Save a lot at places like theme parks, national parks or hotels. Save a little on clothing, restaurants or electronics. Every little bit counts. Remember to always keep your military i.d. with you and make a habit of asking if a company offers veterans a discount every time you spend money. It never hurts to ask.

You’ve done your duty and put in your time. Thank you for your service to this great country. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of the opportunities offered to you for your service.
