5 Ways You Could Be Hurting Your Skin Without Knowing It

hurting skin

Exclusive Article at EMRIndustry

You’re using toner, an eye cream, and even a night serum, but you’re still suffering from unpleasant breakouts and imperfections—what’s going on? Turns out, there are a few bad habits you may not have realized are hurting your skin and keeping you from achieving that glow that you’ve always dreamed of. Read on to find out what could be damaging your skin, and what you can do to improve your natural complexion.

1) You’re not using SPF makeup…

If you haven’t gotten the memo just yet, sun protection should be a key priority in your skincare routine. Not only does SPF help protect your skin from skin cancer and other diseases, but it also can help prevent signs of aging and reduce the appearance of dark spots and other imperfections.

But simply applying sunscreen when you’re headed out to the beach isn’t enough. SPF should be incorporated in your makeup routine as well so that you’re protected from harmful UV rays at all times—no matter how much you’re being exposed to the sun throughout the day. An SPF facial primer or powdered foundation gives you a great base for days when you’re intermittently out in the sun, but don’t forget to reapply and wear a wide brim sun hat if you’re spending longer periods of time outdoors.

Remember: even if the sun isn’t shining, your skin is still being exposed to UV rays that can cause sunburns and lasting damage, so always apply SPF.

2) You’re eating an unhealthy diet…

Try swapping out that burger and fries for something on the healthier side of things! You’ve probably heard the saying, “you are what you eat,” and at least as far as skincare goes, it’s true. According to a 2013 study from the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, studies found that carbohydrates and processed sugars were associated with participants’ acne breakouts.

Here are a few of the worst foods for your skin you should avoid:

  • White bread
  • Bagels
  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Salt
  • Hot sauce

Now, switch up your diet in favor of some of these healthy alternatives for clear skin:

  • Salmon
  • Watermelon
  • Green Tea
  • Olive Oil
  • Kale
  • Almonds
  • Berries
  • Broccoli
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Greek Yogurt

3) You’re not washing enough…

Yes, you should be washing your face everyday—but we’re talking about other items that come in contact with your complexion that could be causing irritation and breakouts. Make sure you’re regularly washing and cleaning these items to help keep your skin looking and feeling great.

  • Cell phone
  • Sunglasses
  • Pillowcase
  • Hands

Use a natural hypoallergenic cleaning solution to clean your items and limit chemical exposure to your skin. Or, go a step further and stick to earbuds or bluetooth and eliminate your skin’s contact with your phone altogether!

4) You’re still smoking…

Healthy skin is made from the inside out. Besides being a major factor in cancer and other diseases, smoking can also cause permanent damage to your skin. Effects could range from under eye bags to wrinkles, hair loss, and a dull, grayish complexion. Quit smoking, and watch your skin reap the benefits!

5) You’re picking at imperfections…

It’s tempting to pick at and pop imperfections on your face, but this habit could actually be to blame for scarring and spreading acne. Rather than picking at your skin, leave it be and apply some natural remedies to help you deal with the symptoms of acne instead.

Next time you have a blemish or pimple, try using one of these treatments:

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of honey with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to form a paste. After cleansing your face, apply the mask and let set for 10-15 minutes. Rinse the mask off and then pat face dry.
  • Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar to 3 parts water and apply the mixture to the skin with a cotton ball after cleansing. Repeat 1-2 times per day if necessary.
  • Mix 1 part tea tree oil with 9 parts water. Soak a cotton swab in the mixture and apply to acne affected areas, moisturize.

In conclusion

By avoiding these unhealthy skin habits and following our tips for better skincare, you’ll achieve that flawless glow in no time!
