AHIMA Receives Award for Online Coding Courses

AHIMA Receives Award for Online Coding Courses

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is being recognized for its revised online Coding Basics program with a 2015 HCM Brandon Hall Excellence Gold Award.

As a leading source of knowledge about health information management, AHIMA identified a need to update its Coding Basics program to support coder workforce development after the transition to ICD-10, a new coding system that was implemented nationwide in October. AHIMA worked with Pearson Higher Education to create a more engaging program for students that provides up-to-date information and a world class design interface.

The Brandon Hall Group Human Capital Management Excellence Awards recognize innovative, high-quality educational and training programs throughout the country.

“AHIMA is honored to receive this award, particularly at such a pivotal time for the HIM industry,” said AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon, MBA, RHIA, CAE, FACHE, FAHIMA. “With the transition to ICD-10 this month, it is imperative that AHIMA offer engaging, robust training to prepare students to take on this new challenge and provide leadership to their healthcare organizations.”

AHIMA and Pearson worked together quickly to rebuild the program to not only fit students’ expectations, but also reach a larger market to help grow the workforce and serve the nation’s need for skilled HIM professionals. The outcome is a more robust, high-quality training program to create a pathway for new HIM professionals to enter the field of medical coding.

“Our mission is to lead the health informatics and information management community to advance professional practice and standards,” said Thomas Gordon. “The new Coding Basics program for which our team is being recognized directly addresses that mission.”
