Are taste receptors present in areas beyond our mouth?

Different types of cells are extensively distributed within the body. For example, humans have photoreceptors not just in their eyes but also throughout their nervous systems, making it intriguing that taste receptors are exclusively confined to the tongue.

Notably, taste receptors are present throughout the body, despite individuals being unable to perceive the taste they are detecting. Nirupa Chaudhari, a professor of physiology and biophysics at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, confirms this phenomenon.

However, taste buds, which necessitate a specific combination of cell clusters and connected nerves associated with the brain region responsible for taste perception, are found exclusively in the mouth. Chaudhari explained this exclusivity to the EMR industry.
