Aug 13 : UMHS recognized for Electronic Medical Records capabilities

umhs recognized

The U-M Health System is now ranked among the top 18.5% of hospitals nationwide by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) for our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) capabilities.

HIMSS is a not-for-profit organization focused on achieving better health through information technology and is considered the primary professional organization for healthcare IT.  The HIMSS Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model incorporates methodology and algorithms to automatically score more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals relative to their EMR capabilities.

After the June Go-Live of MiChart, UMHS jumped straight from Stage 4 to Stage 6 on the EMRAM Model.  This achievement confirms the importance of the functionality now available to UMHS clinicians. Reaching Stage 6 is a result of our focus, direction and unwavering commitment to achieving a successful EMR.  According to the HIMSS process, “Stage 6 institutions have established clear goals for improving safety, minimizing errors, and prioritizing IT implementations.”

The HIMSS EMRAM is an eight-step process that allows health organizations to analyze their level of EMR adoption, chart accomplishments, and track their progress against other healthcare organizations across the country.

Congratulations to all of the UMHS Staff members who have worked together to bring our Health System to this next level. We will continue to expand our EMR implementations so that we can be among the top 3.2% of hospitals in the country at Stage 7.

“This accomplishment is a true testimony to the collaborative, inter-disciplinary effort that MiChart has been over the years. Together, we have more work to do, but HIMSS Level 7 is definitely achievable and a goal we will pursue,” says Sue Schade, MBA, FHIMSS, FCHIME, Chief Information Officer, University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers.
