University Health Network’s Joint Department of Medical Imaging (JDMI) of Toronto, Canada, has purchased 10 CARESTREAM DRX-Evolution Plus digital radiography systems (see video link) and eight CARESTREAM DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray Systems.

The health network initially installed a DRX-Evolution system and assessed it for a year prior to placing an order for additional imaging systems. University Health Network (UHN) includes Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.

“Carestream’s imaging systems and detectors deliver the excellent image quality and fine detail that are required to optimize the care we deliver to fragile patients with severe injuries and illnesses, including patients who are undergoing organ transplants, car accident victims, cardiac patients and those with musculoskeletal injuries,” said Christina Ciapanna, Manager of Medical Imaging, Toronto General Hospital.

“Our employees are passionate about delivering the highest quality of patient care and these imaging systems play a vital role in achieving that goal,” Ms. Ciapanna explained.

The Carestream DRX-Evolution Plus systems are installed in varying configurations that allow technologists to achieve optimal positioning for complex cross-table and musculoskeletal exams. These configurations include some rooms with stationary wall stands and others with wall stands that are on a rail, which allows the wall stand and DR detector to be positioned so the patient does not have to be moved during complex procedures.

“We considered several vendors prior to selecting our first Carestream X-ray room, which we evaluated for one year. Based on our positive experience with Carestream’s image quality and performance, the decision was easy when it came time to updating additional rooms,” said Paul Cornacchione, Senior Director of Imaging Operations, JDMI.

The hospital initially selected a different supplier for portable imaging systems but decided to replace those units since their performance did not meet UHN and JDMI’s needs, according to Mr. Cornacchione.

“We evaluated other mobile systems and decided to replace all our portables with Carestream DRX-Revolution systems,” he said. “Our portable systems capture up to 120 images a day. We are very pleased with their reliability and consistent delivery of extremely high-quality images. These systems are also user friendly, which helps boost staff productivity.”

Service and support are also improved, he added. “Carestream offers exceptional service and their support staff works with our team to promptly resolve issues. They are also committed to working with us to achieve excellent image quality that can equip our staff members to deliver better patient care.”
