Cerner Wins DoD Pathology Lab Contract

cerner

It’s not the coveted $11 billion DoD Healthcare Management System Modernization contract, but health IT giant Cerner has won a Department of Defense solicitation to replace the Military Health System‘s anatomic pathology laboratory information system.

North Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner said that it would supply its  CoPathPlus LIS and appropriate hardware to DoD pathology labs worldwide. The implementation will include workflow automation, management reporting and quality-assurance technology.

Cerner said in a statement that it has been a DoD supplier for more than 20 years.

Though this is a government contract, financial terms have not been disclosed. Cerner apparently was the sole bidder, as DoD last year identified the company as the “only contractor that can provide proprietary services and equipment for the CoPath Plus system, due to the fact that Cerner has not licensed the resale right to maintain the CoPath Plus software to any other contractors.”

According to the August 2014 notice containing that language, Cerner will have 18 months to complete the installation, plus a three-month “transition out” period.

Cerner remains in the running for the massive DHMSM electronic health records contract, in a joint bid with consulting firms Leidos and Accenture Federal. Competitors include: Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Computer Sciences Corp. and Hewlett Packard; and Epic Systems and IBM.

DoD has said it will choose the winner for the $11 billion overhaul of its core health IT before the end of the summer.
