Changes Happening in the Healthcare Industry

The healthcare industry is rapidly changing. Constant new developments are being made all the time that affect how patient care is given and organized. These changes impact both the caregiver and the patient and, in many ways, improve the healthcare system for everyone involved. Here are a few of the areas where big shifts are happening.

Technology

Technological advances in healthcare are happening across all major areas, from data and network management software such as policy and charging rules function, to medical equipment and procedures. New technology allows physicians and the entire related staff to communicate effectively by storing and accessing patient records.

It’s also essential to managing the complex system of personnel, equipment, and clients that revolve through a facility on any given day. Without the use of technology to make everything run smoothly, processes would be stalled, and wait times for both emergency services and routine care would be delayed.

Along with system software to keep everything functioning efficiently, there have been major strides in the types of care offered due to improved tools and knowledge of the human body. Some of those tools include artificial intelligence and even 3-D printing. AI is useful in helping a physician to diagnose an illness or condition and can assist in monitoring patient progress. The advancement in 3-D printing means that this is now a viable option to create prosthetic limbs or even to provide an implant to replace a bone needed to perform a surgery.

Accessibility

New developments are being made in the insurance coverage options offered to the general public to help pay for expensive healthcare costs. Without insurance, many people aren’t able to get the care they need due to rising prices on everything from basic office visits to life-saving surgeries and treatment for a long-term illness.

Action has been taken to increase the government subsidies given to individuals to offset the cost of purchasing a private health insurance plan. Also, the guidelines to qualify for Medicaid have been adjusted to help more people qualify for the assistance that they need. The regulations continue to evolve as it becomes more apparent that a growing number of people need help to access good healthcare.

Telehealth

A great option that has recently become available for patient care is the addition of telehealth. This service allows a patient to make an appointment with a medical care provider to discuss their ongoing health, or address a new complaint, without even leaving their own home. A video or telephone call connects the provider and consumer so they can talk about what is going on.

Telehealth is a good option for follow-ups and medication checks, and can even be helpful for minor or ongoing illnesses. It’s important to remember that additional testing may be requested to confirm a diagnosis, so a trip to the office may still be needed in some cases.

Patient Information

Coordinating care between multiple facilities and doctors can be a challenge when patient information is kept in one office. It’s vital that all members of a care team are aware of the patient’s full medical history and needs to provide them with the best possible care and prevent any complications from contraindications of medications and procedures. Fortunately, there have been improvements to patient records that make it easier for them to access their own information and make copies to give out to other providers.

More healthcare facilities are providing patients with access to their own medical history information through a patient portal. This area is secure and can be accessed only with a password for the security of all involved.

As the ways that healthcare is approached change, it’s important to stay informed. Knowledge will help patients navigate the ever-evolving healthcare system and advocate for themselves to receive the best possible care. When patients are aware of their options, they can more effectively work with their doctors and other healthcare providers to stay healthy and address any concerns that may arise.
