CitiusTech accelerates innovation in healthcare technology

Highlights:

  • Princeton-based CitiusTech celebrates 20 years of healthcare IT innovation
  • Expands portfolio with advanced AI, cloud, and modern software solutions
  • Recent acquisitions bolster digital transformation capabilities
  • Continues global expansion with a strong focus on workforce development

Founded two decades ago in Mumbai, India, CitiusTech was established with a clear mission — to deliver technology solutions that address the unique challenges of the healthcare industry.

Healthcare is one of the most complex sectors, grappling with fragmented data systems, stringent regulatory demands, rising costs, and a shift toward value-based care. At the same time, providers and insurers face growing workforce shortages, cybersecurity risks, and the need to replace outdated systems. Meanwhile, patients increasingly expect seamless digital experiences — including telehealth, personalized apps, and convenient online scheduling.

As the industry rapidly embraces digital transformation, CitiusTech has continued to invest in proprietary platforms and scalable solutions designed to tackle key priorities such as value-based performance, modernization, patient engagement, medical imaging, and digital health transformation.

With its U.S. headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey, CitiusTech has emerged as a major global force in healthcare technology over the past 20 years. The company provides advanced products, solutions, and next-generation technologies that are transforming how healthcare is delivered and financed.

Today, CitiusTech partners with more than 140 hospitals, insurers, medtech companies, and life sciences organizations worldwide — helping them leverage data, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and modern software to enhance patient care, streamline operations, and ensure regulatory compliance.

“Since our founding in 2005, we’ve witnessed several waves of technological transformation,” said Shyam Karunakaran, Executive Vice President at CitiusTech. “When we started, even iPhones didn’t exist. In these 20 years, much has evolved — but one thing has remained constant: our unwavering focus on healthcare. We have always been, and will continue to be, dedicated solely to this industry.”

Bridging the gaps
There are many organizations that identify as product companies or consulting firms with a presence in healthcare,” he said. “What truly sets us apart is our ability to connect the dots across the entire healthcare ecosystem — understanding technology disruptions and strategically investing to stay ahead.

Karunakaran — who joined CitiusTech in 2009 — said, “From the very beginning, our vision has been to reimagine and accelerate healthcare technology transformation. That’s never been an easy task for any organization in this space.”

“Our focus has always been on implementing technology faster, better, and more cost-effectively — and that remains unchanged. As we continue to expand geographically and explore new markets, we’ll take on a broader range of work for healthcare organizations. But even as we evolve, our core mission has stayed the same for the past 20 years.”

“Specialization has always been at the heart of our culture,” he added. “Many successful companies operate with a broad, general focus, but true innovation comes from understanding trends deeply and building on them. That’s why our commitment to specialization — and layering new ideas on top of that foundation — is central to everything we do.”

Primary areas of focus include:

  • Data management and analytics: Empowering organizations to efficiently manage, analyze, and utilize large volumes of clinical, financial, and operational data.
  • Application and product engineering: Designing, developing, and modernizing software solutions tailored to the healthcare sector.
  • AI and cloud integration: Enabling healthcare organizations to adopt cloud platforms, leverage AI/ML, and scale effectively for future growth.

As a result of these initiatives, CitiusTech’s innovations are empowering health systems to anticipate patient needs more effectively, assisting payers with advanced value-based care analytics, and helping medtech companies accelerate the launch of new devices and digital solutions.

Broadening capabilities
In recent years, the company has strengthened its capabilities through several strategic acquisitions, including:

  • December 2020: Acquired FluidEdge Consulting, a firm focused on healthcare management consulting.
  • June 2021: Acquired SDLC Partners, a Pittsburgh-based consulting and data analytics company.
  • November 2022: Acquired Wilco Source, a U.S.–India Salesforce consulting firm specializing in healthcare and life sciences.

Most recently, in August, CitiusTech acquired Health Data Movers, a North Carolina–based company recognized for its expertise in electronic medical records (EMR) and healthcare IT integration.

Financial terms of the four acquisitions were not disclosed.

CitiusTech CEO Rajan Kohli called the latest acquisition a “pivotal moment and tremendous opportunity” for both organizations as they work to address the needs of an evolving healthcare landscape.
“This partnership strengthens CitiusTech’s role as a strategic collaborator across the healthcare ecosystem,” Kohli said. “By integrating Health Data Movers’ Epic implementation and integration expertise into our portfolio, we gain the ability to operate at the heart of the Epic ecosystem — helping to solve some of the industry’s most pressing challenges.”

Shyam Karunakaran added, “Health Data Movers primarily focuses on Epic implementation for provider systems. Epic, being the most widely used electronic health record (EHR) platform in the U.S., represents a key capability for us as we continue to expand our clinical data and provider-focused solutions.”
“We already have a strong provider business,” he continued, “but adding Epic expertise was a strategic enhancement that strengthens our overall suite of offerings.”

Enhanced value
Discussing the rapid transformation of the healthcare industry, Karunakaran identified artificial intelligence (AI) as the most significant driving force.

“AI is undeniably the technology of the future — that’s beyond debate,” he said. “Its complexity and capabilities are evolving at an incredible pace. Just imagine what it could achieve in the next five years — or even in two. If any industry stands to gain the most from this kind of technological disruption, it’s healthcare. From both a mission and focus standpoint, there’s enormous potential to enhance real-world applications, and we’re already seeing meaningful progress in production implementations.”

In a recent example, AI helped reduce the time a nurse spent reviewing clinical charts — from about an hour to less than 15 minutes.

Karunakaran explained, “Our focus is on empowering physicians and nurses with better decision support — not replacing their decision-making. Building a use case like this requires analyzing multiple chart types and patient notes, designing systems that can interpret that data, and anticipating the kinds of questions clinicians might ask. It’s about making the information more accessible and actionable.”

He continued, “This is where we see real value being added to the care delivery ecosystem. If you look back two or three years, especially right after COVID, one of the biggest challenges in care delivery was the shortage of physicians, nurses, and clinical staff.”

“You can add administrative resources, but without clinicians, nurses, and physician assistants, productivity remains limited. Achieving a 60% improvement in just one use case is a strong example of how technology can deliver measurable value and enhance clinical efficiency,” Karunakaran said.

CitiusTech: How AI Is Helping Reduce Clinician Burnout in Home Healthcare

Looking ahead
CitiusTech operates several offices across the U.S. and maintains a strong global presence with locations in India, the U.K., Singapore, Poland, Switzerland, and Dubai.

Since 2011, Princeton has served as the company’s U.S. headquarters and remains home to most of its executive leadership team. The office at 2 Research Way also holds special significance—it was CitiusTech’s first location in the United States.

“I think Princeton is a wonderful town to be associated with,” said Karunakaran. “It’s a place rich in history and tradition, which aligns well with our values. There’s also a deep pool of healthcare, life sciences, and research talent here. Being part of the Princeton community has been incredibly valuable for us.”

I think Princeton is a wonderful town to be associated with. It is a town that is rich in history and tradition, which is really important for us.

– Shyam Karunakaran, CitiusTech EVP

With a global workforce of more than 7,700 employees, Karunakaran said one of CitiusTech’s biggest ongoing challenges is ensuring its people remain highly skilled.

“We’re a company that grows about 20% every year, and while our attrition rate is low, the reality is that roughly 35% of our organization is new annually,” he explained. “Our goal is to build a team with deep expertise in healthcare and healthcare technology — and that’s a continuous challenge we have to address.”

He added that finding talent with prior healthcare experience isn’t always easy. “If your workforce changes by 35% each year, perhaps one-third will come with a healthcare background. That means our focus has to be on training, developing, and equipping the remaining employees with the right domain knowledge,” he said.

To support that mission, CitiusTech created its own online training platform about 15 years ago — a comprehensive learning ecosystem that offers open courses on healthcare and related technologies.

“That’s a critical investment to make sure healthcare remains at the core of everything we do,” Karunakaran emphasized.
