Communicating Effectively With Your Patients In A Digital Age

communicating effectively with patients

Working in the medical field is an extremely rewarding experience. Whether you are a doctor or someone who write the product manuals for technical devices you are communicating with patients. There are a lot of concerns that patients can have and sometimes it can be really hard to know how you can serve them the best. Communication is key when you are working with other humans and especially your patients. Discussing medical history and even medical symptoms can be embarrassing and even scary for most patients. If you want to get the full story and treat them or serve them properly, the best thing you can do is try to be effective with your communication. Here are five ways you can communicate well with your medical patients:

Know What They Need

This can be so hard when a patient is hard to understand or they are older and have a difficult time talking. The best thing to do is to listen to the patient. This does not mean that you are just quiet when they are talking, this means that you are actively listening to them and what they are saying. This way you can repeat what the patient said to you and make sure that you know that you are getting them the correct information and products.

Be Honest

It does not help a patient when you are not honest with them. Being honest does not mean that you have to be rude or have a terrible bedside manner. This just means that you can be truthful with their diagnosis or if a certain item is out of stock. When you are honest you are helping your customer or patient be able to make the correct decision when you give them all of the necessary facts. This one should not be too hard to follow but it can be hard when you have to deliver bad news to others.

Probe When Necessary

It is so important to know all of the correct when you are helping a patient. If you are placing an online order for a customer, make sure you are getting the right brand, color, size, and even material that they need. If you are diagnosing a patient for a life altering surgery or major life change you want to be 100% sure you have the correct information.

Seek For Understanding

Your main goal should always be understanding the patient. If you are taking a phone call and trying to help a customer, you may have a certain idea of what they want when they call in. Take a moment to suspend your assumptions and take a minute or two to listen to what they want. This can be helpful when you are in escalated calls or when you are dealing with unhappy patients who do not seem satisfied with their care. If you are not sure how to understand a patient or negotiate with someone, you can always consider negotiations training. This can help give you additional resources to communicate well with the people you come in contact with.

Keep Being Your Best

We are all human and that means everyone is susceptible to error and mistakes. The patient can make errors and so can you. Do not be too hard on yourself when you mess up. Taking time to reflect is important so you can think about what you did wrong and different ways you can be better in the future. It takes a certain amount of humility to understand that you are not perfect and that you messed up. It takes a lot of courage to admit that you messed up and did something wrong. Doing this will help you improve as an employee and as an overall person.
