DrFirst’s SmartSuite Wins ‘AI Innovation Award’ in 2021 MedTech Breakthrough Awards Program

Annual Awards Program Recognizes Outstanding Health & Medical Technology Products and Companies

LOS ANGELES – May 6, 2021 – MedTech Breakthrough, an independent market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies and products in the global health and medical technology market, today announced that health technology pioneer DrFirst has been selected as the winner of the “Artificial Intelligence Innovation Award” in the fifth annual MedTech Breakthrough Awards program, recognizing DrFirst’s SmartSuite solution.

Despite decades of progress in digitization and standardization, healthcare still has a problem making data functional within electronic health records (EHR) and pharmacy management systems. SmartSuite solves that problem within the clinical workflow by converting free text from external systems into a user system’s unique terminology and presenting the data discretely into appropriate fields. This maximizes functionality within the EHR and saves time for clinicians. The AI also codifies prescriptions and refill requests, and reconciles medication histories when exchanged between EHR systems, payers, pharmacies and HIEs.

In addition, SmartSuite processes continuity of care documents from legacy EHR conversions to create normalized and importable medication history from previously unusable data. Using clinical and statistical context, SmartSuite’s patented AI engine cleans and structures data beyond standard neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). It also deciphers clinical language and interprets missing clinical details that are implied but not present.

“SmartSuite AI is built on the principle that ‘it’s better to give no answer than to give the wrong answer.’ With higher-quality and structured data, the EHR can more accurately trigger critical safety checks, such as drug interactions and allergy alerts. This can help reduce adverse drug events, which are the cause of more than 100,000 deaths per year,” said G. Cameron Deemer, president at DrFirst. “We are extremely pleased to receive this industry recognition for our patented AI technology with the SmartSuite solution.”

“Data sharing is essential to a patient’s transition from one clinician to another and SmartSuite is an enormous leap forward in quality in this area, making that data usable across non-connected systems, helping clinicians spend less time reconciling free text manually, and freeing them up to focus on patient safety and throughput,” said James Johnson, managing director, MedTech Breakthrough. “We extend our sincere congratulations to DrFirst on their well-deserved ‘AI Innovation Award’ win in our 2021 MedTech Breakthrough Awards program.”

The mission of the MedTech Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work and success in a range of health and medical technology categories, including Robotics, Clinical Administration, Telehealth, Patient Engagement, Electronic Health Records (EHR), mHealth, Medical Devices, Medical Data and many more. This year’s program attracted more than 3,850 nominations from over 17 different countries throughout the world.
