OSEHRA is an alliance of corporations, agencies, and individuals dedicated to advancing the state of the art in open source electronic health record (EHR) systems and related health information technology. Founded in 2011 under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, OSEHRA is a 501(c)(6) non-profit membership organization that includes a diverse global community of information technology and healthcare professionals.
Our Mission
“Build and support an open source community of users, developers, service providers, and researchers engaged in advancing electronic health record software and related health information technology.” We do this by offering critical services such as an open software repository, supporting tools, a baseline open EHR product, and the administrative support necessary to foster collaboration and innovation across the community.
Our Vision
“OSEHRA will be the hub of open source software efforts in the health information technology community.” We will provide the technical tools and the collaborative venues. The community will provide the expertise and the passion to innovate.
Why OSEHRA?
We believe that the open source approach to software development will produce the most effective and adaptable software products at the lowest possible cost. The time has come to move away from closed proprietary processes and harness the full innovative power of the open source business model in support of healthcare worldwide. This will require widespread collaboration and best-in-class solutions from across the healthcare community. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs took the initiative by releasing its VistA EHR as open source software and participating in the creation of OSEHRA to support its deployment. Together, the members of the Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance will make a difference in the future of healthcare.
