Varian Medical Systems Releases EclipseTreatment Planning Software

athenahealth

Eclipse™ treatment planning software from Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) has been named a “Category Leader” in the 2014 “Best in KLAS: Software and Services Report” by KLAS, a research firm that specializes in monitoring and reporting on the performance of healthcare vendors.  This was the second year in a row that Varian’s Eclipse software was named Category Leader for treatment planning.

Varian’s Eclipse software, which is in use at some 3,400 cancer treatment centers around the world, optimizes a radiotherapy treatment plan based on a physician’s dose instructions, and information about the size, shape and location of the tumor to be treated with radiation.  The treatment plan becomes the basis for electronic instructions that tell the radiotherapy machine how to deliver the treatment: what angles to use, how much dose to deliver from each angle, and how the treatment beam should be shaped to match the shape of the tumor.

Eclipse software incorporates planning protocols and easy-to-use optimization tools that make it easier and faster to plan sophisticated cancer treatments like intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and RapidArc® radiotherapy.  It offers clinicians a set of treatment plan templates that streamline the process of creating a personalized plan for each patient.

In research currently summarized on KLASresearch.com, Eclipse scored above average in some key areas, including: “product works as promoted,” “implementation on time,” “quality of training,” “functionality and upgrades,” and “likely to recommend.”  Scores were well above average in “part of our long-term plans,” “product has needed functionality,” and “ranked client’s best vendor.”

In published comments on KLASresearch.com, KLAS stated: “Providers report great satisfaction with both the support and how the [Eclipse] product integrates with other systems.  One senior physicist shared the following: ‘Eclipse is a strong product for Varian….It is solid and performs very well while integrating with our TrueBeam® and ARIA® products….It is great from a physicist’s point of view, but I also think those who have to support it appreciate the stability as well as the efficiency for our department. It has a nice workflow and is fairly seamless.'”

“We’ve been working diligently to enhance Eclipse software to put vital information at clinicians’ fingertips so they can create high quality treatment plans based on best-practice models,” says Kolleen Kennedy, president of Varian’s Oncology Systems business.  “We are gratified to have received top marks in KLAS’s survey of our customers.  This recognition is a validation of our efforts to make Eclipse a best-in-class tool for fighting cancer.”

The 2014 Best in KLAS report, published at the end of January, ranks healthcare vendors and their solutions by the professionals who use them—healthcare providers.
