Healthcare Digital Transformation in 2019: Outlook and Recommendations

The Damo Consulting report assesses the current state of digital, analytics, and technology-led innovation in healthcare, and highlights the trends to watch in 2019.

Damo Consulting, a leading growth and digital transformation consultancy for healthcare enterprises and technology firms, today announced their inaugural 2019 Outlook for Healthcare’s Digital Transformation.

The report assesses the current state of digital, analytics, and technology-led innovation in healthcare, and highlights the trends to watch in 2019. The report includes a set of recommendations for technology solution providers and healthcare enterprises to advance digital transformation initiatives.

The 2019 Outlook Report concludes, among other things, that:

  • While technology spending in healthcare will increase, there will be multiple competing priorities for discretionary spending at the enterprise level that could impact digital transformation initiatives
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems optimization will continue to consume a large chunk of enterprise IT budgets in health systems, as will technical debt arising from years of underinvestment.
  • Healthcare Digital transformation will gain momentum but health systems are reluctant to look beyond their EHR vendors
  • Healthcare executives will be less enamored with technology per se and will be more focused on clinical integration of technology solutions to improve patient experiences and healthcare outcomes.

“The challenge for health systems and their technology providers is to find and deploy solutions that will integrate seamlessly into clinical workflows and care pathways,” says Paddy Padmanabhan, CEO of Damo Consulting. “Most big tech firms have stopped short of building last-mile solutions. Digital health startups, on the other hand, face a continuing struggle for growth and stability. Many of them will shut down as they run out of funding in 2019”.

Padmanabhan says that there is good news too: “Artificial Intelligence will go more mainstream as healthcare realizes benefits from ongoing AI initiatives, and discovers new use cases. However, AI-enabled technology providers will have to demonstrate more transparency with algorithms and the use of patient data.”

“Health systems should start to look beyond their EHR vendors for advanced analytics and digital health innovation in 2019” added Padmanabhan.
