Healthcare, life sciences smarten with Google Cloud’s AI

The American healthcare system is confronted with a triple challenge – escalating administrative expenses, physician burnout, and a global shortage of nurses. According to a 2022 report from the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare, healthcare administrative costs surged by 30%, reaching $60 billion annually. This coincided with a 53% increase in physician burnout in 2022, as reported by Medscape. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted a global nursing shortage exceeding 13 million in 2020.

These difficulties present a significant opportunity for innovation. Healthcare providers, insurance firms, electronic health record developers, and life science enterprises can leverage AI, particularly generative AI, to devise solutions that alleviate the challenges faced by healthcare workers.

Motivated by these pressing issues, Google Cloud has launched new solutions – Vertex AI Search for Healthcare, Healthcare Data Engine (HDE), and MedLM – aimed at assisting healthcare and life sciences organizations in promoting interoperability, establishing a robust data foundation, and deploying GenAI tools to improve patient outcomes.

Vertex AI Search for Healthcare empowers developers to design more effective assistive technology for clinicians and healthcare professionals, thereby lessening their administrative workload. It provides tailored GenAI search capabilities across various healthcare data sets, including Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources data and clinical notes.

This search and question-answering functionality seamlessly integrates with MedlinePlus, Healthcare Data Engine, and Cloud Healthcare FHIR APIs, streamlining the development of data analytics and AI solutions for next-generation healthcare systems.

Aashima Gupta, Global Director for Healthcare Strategy and Solutions at Google Cloud, emphasized how Vertex AI Search for Healthcare positively impacts healthcare organizations by ensuring clinicians have access to relevant information for informed decision-making, thereby enhancing patient care quality.

Google Cloud is also enhancing access to Healthcare Data Engine by offering it as a consumption-based managed service, enabling healthcare organizations worldwide to deploy, build, and manage near real-time healthcare data platforms in the cloud. The expansion of HDE now covers cloud regions across Europe and the Asia Pacific, facilitating broader platform adoption.

The introduction of HDE Data Mapper, a low-code graphical integrated development environment, simplifies data transformation and facilitates the creation of high-quality longitudinal patient records in FHIR format. Additionally, its integration with Vertex AI Search for Healthcare enables clinicians to conduct unified searches across various systems and formats, saving time and improving the patient experience.

Furthermore, Google Cloud has expanded MedLM capabilities for healthcare clients, introducing features such as Chest X-ray Classification and the Condition Summary API. These enhancements empower developers to address various healthcare use cases effectively.

In conclusion, Google Cloud emphasizes its commitment to providing enterprise-grade GenAI solutions grounded in real data for healthcare organizations. It ensures patient data privacy through secure infrastructure and compliant data storage practices that adhere to HIPAA regulations while respecting individual customer security and privacy controls.
