Rothman Index leads the way in Proactive Rounding, Palliative Care, and Daily Safety Huddles

To improve patient outcomes and further its mission to provide high quality, cost-effective healthcare that delivers the best value to the people it serves, Houston Methodist has upgraded its Rothman Index global clinical surveillance technology. Houston Methodist comprises a leading academic medical center in the Texas Medical Center, six community hospitals and one specialty hospital serving the Greater Houston area.

“The Rothman Index for Palliative Care: Have the Conversation”

Katherine Walsh, Chief Nursing Officer at Houston Methodist, says, “The Rothman Index has become ingrained in our workflow and outcomes measurement. We have a Rothman Index Champion’s Meeting that provides a forum for team members to share examples of ‘safe catches.’”

Houston Methodist implemented the Rothman Index in March 2016 and has been a valued development partner, achieving outcomes including a 32 percent risk-adjusted mortality reduction and 11 percent sepsis mortality reduction the first year of implementation.

The Rothman Index is the only proven algorithm that derives one simple score from the vast amount of data in the electronic medical record to create a picture of any patient’s condition over time – any age, any disease, any unit. It can detect patient deterioration hours or days earlier than existing scores and systems.

With the latest Rothman Index enhancements, Houston Methodist can now:

  • Access pre-defined subsets of the house-wide population, including a palliative care filter to help trigger palliative care consults.
  • Configure patient warning lane views for daily safety huddle teams to use across multiple units, guiding patient care priorities.
  • Participate in PeraHealth’s sepsis calculator research project.
  • Add new content areas, such as inpatient discharges and 24-hour ICU bouncebacks, to provide more visibility into specific patient populations.

Houston Methodist team members will share their powerful results at PeraHealth’s TRENDS 2019 Customer Conference on September 26-27, in Baltimore.

To learn more about the power of the Rothman Index, view the on-demand webinar: “The Rothman Index for Palliative Care: Have the Conversation,” with guest speaker Rebel Heasley, RN, MSN, MHA, CHPN, Director of Palliative Care and Guest Relations at Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital.

About PeraHealth

PeraHealth is a software company that uses the Rothman Index to transform the clinical and financial efficiency of healthcare. The Rothman Index is the only algorithm that derives one simple score from the vast amount of data in the electronic medical record to create a picture of any patient’s condition over time – any age, any disease, any unit. It is the only algorithm proven to reduce mortality in practice. Other results include reducing length of stay and readmissions. Our customers are leading hospitals and clinicians who need to identify patients at risk of rapid decline, make decisions about transfer and discharge, predict the risk of severe infection, and improve the overall efficiency and quality of care.
