How EHR Interoperability Helps Connect Patients With Clinical Trials

crowder

For the eighth consecutive year, Nextrials, Inc., a leader in clinical research software and services, is playing a key role in showing how patients, physicians and healthcare institutions can more easily participate in medical research at the 2016 Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference and Exhibition. During the HIMSS16 Interoperability Showcase, being held March 1-3 in Las Vegas, Nextrials’ Prism clinical trial management platform is intersecting with platforms used to collect and store patient data in the healthcare setting. Within the framework of a test patient scenario, Nextrials and other participants are showcasing how physicians can deliver broader healthcare options to those dealing with serious ailments by referring and enrolling them in upcoming clinical trials.

This year, stakeholder organizations such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are connected through a networked system to illustrate how a prostate cancer patient might easily receive a better continuum of care. Without additional work on the patient’s part, his information will move from a private physician’s office where his initial diagnosis took place to an oncology specialist; from there, he is given details on an appropriate clinical trial, asked if he would like to participate, is enrolled in the trial and receives follow-up contact by his initial medical team, all using the same data.

“This interoperability demonstration shows how an integrated data platform such as the one offered by Nextrials presents new opportunities for healthcare providers and researchers, not to mention expanded care options for patients,” said James Rogers, CEO and co-founder of Nextrials. “With clinical research costs soaring, data integration can give researchers a bigger potential pool of participants, resulting in quicker study starts. And patients receive the benefit of learning about leading-edge research that may present new treatment options.”

According to a survey referenced by the National Cancer Institute, less than three percent of cancer patients choose to participate in clinical trials, primarily due to lack of information. Additionally, according to the FDA, the majority of clinical trials are delayed due to problems identifying and enrolling qualified patients. Both of these problems could be alleviated if more physicians and private clinics established patient registries containing patient characteristics, patterns of care and outcomes — information already being collected by electronic health records. Researchers could then securely access that data using Nextrials’ Prism, one of the clinical research industry’s few data platforms fully integrated with platforms used for EHR by the healthcare industry.

The purpose of the HIMSS16 Interoperability Showcase is to demonstrate cutting edge technologies and standards-based systems such as EHR interoperability that advance a vision of connected health and care. Visitors can find the showcase in Booth 11954, Exhibit Hall G of the Venetian/Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas.
