Iowa Cancer Specialists Moves to New, Larger Facility

Spacious Location Provides Room for More Services, Even Better Experiences

Iowa Cancer Specialists (ICS), the sole independent oncology practice in the Quad Cities, today officially opens the doors of a spacious new centrally-located facility. The ICS team will continue to deliver the same high-quality care for patients with cancer and benign blood disorders, but the new 8,800-square-foot facility allows for an expansion of patient services, new staff members, and an improved patient-provider experience.

Located at 1750 E. 53rd Street in Davenport, the new ICS facility is more than 2,500 square feet larger than its previous space. It has a procedure room, more exam rooms, a dispensary for prescription and non-prescription medications, an in-house lab, an infusion center, and is conveniently located next door to a large radiology imaging center. The new facility has a vibrant, modern design and offers convenient, much closer parking for patients.

“In the Quad Cities, you don’t have to leave town to find the same level of cancer care that you would expect at nationally ranked hospitals,” said Dr. Susannah Friemel, ICS president. “At ICS, we offer the same treatments that you would receive at the Mayo Clinic, University of Iowa or Cancer Treatment Centers of America, just much closer to home. We also help co-manage the care of patients who are seen at these larger centers so that recommended treatments can be given locally.”

Friemel added, “Although we are called Iowa Cancer Specialists, we also evaluate and treat benign hematologic, or blood, illnesses and other conditions unrelated to cancer. We provide comprehensive and compassionate care to support the well-being of our patients and their family members.” New services from ICS, which has been serving the community since 1986, include weight management and lifestyle intervention classes to promote health, healing and a more vibrant life. These new services dovetail with the ICS holistic approach to treatment, which includes modalities such as functional medicine, with its focus on achieving optimal function of the body and its organs to help both prevent and treat disease.

A doctor of oncology and hematology care, Friemel continues to work with Dr. Linda Jager, an expert in palliative care, family medicine, survivorship care and lifestyle intervention, and Tami Sheldon, an ARNP with expertise in women’s health and pain management. These medical professionals will benefit from the larger facility because it was designed independently from the ground up to optimize patient care and efficient workflow.

“Our office staff and providers are, and have always been, a cohesive team,” said Friemel. “That is so important for developing long-term, meaningful relationships with our patients, who are looking for, need, and appreciate the emotional support that ICS’ extended family provides.”

ICS expects to add a second oncologist to the team in the future. The new facility will help accommodate the growing ICS staff. With the move, ICS also is implementing a new electronic medical records system built to address the specialized needs of an oncology office. The new EMR system, which ICS is creating in collaboration with healthcare technology and services company Flatiron Health, will launch later this year.

Iowa Cancer Specialists

Iowa Cancer Specialists (ICS) treats patients like family to help them live life beyond cancer. ICS’ staff takes a holistic approach, supporting patients through their treatment for cancer and benign blood disorders. This caring approach blends Western and evidence-based medicine with creative ways to care for the whole person – not just their cancer. As the only independently owned and operated oncology practice in the Quad Cities, ICS’ highly personalized approach provides coordinated care, shorter treatment times, and financial flexibility. Most importantly, ICS gives patients hope for a cancer-free future. For more information, please visit www.iacancer.com, and follow ICS on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and the ICS blog.
