Jan 16: DoD to keep health record system a few more years

electronic medical records

The Pentagon would like to keep its current electronic health record system for a few more years.

A new solicitation seeks to sustain the Composite Health Care System and AHLTA through 2018. AHLTA is the military’s electronic health record, while CHCS is the Defense Department’s core medical information system, according to the solicitation.

DoD and the Department of Veterans Affairs tried for several years to develop a single EHR, an effort that apparently ground to a halt in 2013 after the departments spent more than $1 billion.

UPDATE: On Jan. 13, the Dod issued a statement to clarify that this solicitation does not change its plans to replace the system. “This contract is targeted simply to sustain the DoD’s current EHR systems and in no way influences the schedule and delivery of its replacement,” the statement reads. “The sustainment contract has a single base period of five months and four individual option years that can be exercised as needed to align with the schedule of the replacement EHR.” Source
