Jan 28 : CoverMyMeds Adds Additional EHR Integration to Expand Electronic Prior Authorization Offering

More Health Care Facilities Will Have Access to Integrated ePA as a Result of Integration

CoverMyMeds, the nation’s largest prior authorization (PA) platform, today announced the completion of an integration with Epic. The integration will allow Epic electronic health record (EHR) users to access CoverMyMeds electronic prior authorizations (ePAs) in their EHR workflow, enabling PAs at the point of prescribing.

Electronic prior authorization automates and expedites the PA process within the clinical workflow. ePA connects prescribers, pharmacies and insurance companies to facilitate the determination of medication benefits and ensure patients receive prescribed drugs. The adoption of ePA is particularly important due to the administrative strains that manual, paper-based PA processes have on prescribers and payers. The delays and confusion often result in patient prescription abandonment. According to a study by Frost & Sullivan, 40% of PAs are abandoned due to complex policies and procedures. As a result, many patients do not receive their originally prescribed medications.

“The integration of ePA with Epic is an important milestone for ePA adoption,” said Matt Scantland, Co-Founder of CoverMyMeds. “However, less than half of health insurers currently support electronic prior authorization. CoverMyMeds addresses this gap by connecting to all payers, regardless of ePA capabilities, while presenting a universal process to prescribers. Prescribers using CoverMyMeds do not need to remember which process to use or what health plans support ePA. This functionality is unique to CoverMyMeds, and we’re pleased to offer our all-payer capability to Epic users.”

CoverMyMeds used its National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) SCRIPT Standard-based API to facilitate the integration with Epic. CoverMyMeds does not charge prescribers or their staff for processing prior authorizations.
