Alane S. Combs Honored for Accomplishments in Health Information Administration
Ms. Combs implements and supports the electronic health record working as a consultant for Coastal Healthcare Consulting, Inc.

Alane Combs, RHIA, MIS, Senior Information Systems Consultant of Coastal Healthcare Consulting Inc., has been recognized by Worldwide Branding for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in administering health information management.

With three decades of experience in the industry Ms. Combs has become an expert in health information management (HIM) and the electronic health record. In her current role as a senior information systems consultant for 15 years her duties include implementing and supporting the electronic health record in health systems including acute care hospitals and hospital clinics in a variety of roles, such as application analyst, training, and go-live support.

Additionally, Ms. Combs served as health information department director, utilization management coordinator, quality assessment analyst, and data analyst in large, university health systems, medium sized hospitals, and rural hospitals. Through these job opportunities Ms. Combs gained in-depth knowledge of health care documentation requirements, as well as reimbursement methodologies for hospitals and physicians. She applies this knowledge when tailoring electronic health record applications because if the data is not gathered, then it cannot be reported for research studies, quality core measures, utilization review, state health reporting, Joint Commission, and Centers for Medicare and Medication requirements.

Ms. Combs attributes her success to being lucky in finding a field that she is passionate about. The HIM field continues to hold her interest because of changing from paper medical records to electronic health records requiring her to learn new skills and gain valuable knowledge. She entered her consultant position without experience and knowledge of the electronic health record (EHR) system. She learned this system while she did the job, and was hired as a consultant because of her health information management knowledge. Her utilization management experience provided helpful knowledge in working on the nursing units and in physician clinics to implement and support computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and electronic health record systems. She was motivated to get a master’s degree in information systems, which she did in an online program from the University of Phoenix; graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She had already earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.

Recently inducted into Worldwide Branding, Ms. Combs maintains RHIA credentials and affiliation with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). She is also a former member of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and served on their Electronic Health Record (EHR) Task Force 2007-2009 and participated in writing a white paper on workflow assessments.

Coastal Healthcare Consulting Inc. provides project management, application support, training and technical services for electronic health record implementations. For more information, visit http://www.coastalhealthcare.com.
