Keeping Your Eyes Healthy

Keeping Your Eyes Healthy

One of the most important and intriguing parts of the human body is the eye. Without it, people would not be able to see or experience various things in life. It’s crucial that each individual take precious care of their eyes as they are rather sensitive and need to be looked after. Here are some things you can do to help your eyes healthy.

Stay Hydrated

While making sure you are hydrated is important for your overall health, few people realize how important is for your eye as well. When you don’t have enough fluid in your body, it could lead to dry eyes which could then cause even worse eye problems. Your tear ducts could suffer, which may only seem significant if you label yourself as a crier; however, this could cause serious damage.

Blink Often

Many think that screens are the main cause of eye issues, but not taking the time to let your eye have a break from straining to see something can also be harmful. If you are focusing on a certain project or book, you may start to feel like your eyes are straining to see things better. Instead of forcing them to work through it, look away for a few moments and let your eyes have a little rest.

Watch Screens

It’s common knowledge that screens have a negative effect on the health of one’s eyes, but most are not aware of how they do it. One of the main reasons is because of the blue light it is causing your eyes to process. Too much exposure to this light could potentially damage your retina or cause you to have constant eyestrain. If you work at a computer all day or experience long periods of staring at a screen, you may want to think about purchasing special glasses from somewhere like Blue Free Optical. You could also make sure your eyes are about 20 to 24 inches away from the screen.

Limit Touching

If you find that you are consistently rubbing or “scratching” your eyes because they seem itchy or irritated, you could actually be damaging them. When you go to subconsciously rub them, the chance of you having washed your hands right before you do it is extremely low. You are allowing your highly sensitive eyes to be open to receiving bacteria, germs, and possibly even infections. If you struggle to break the habit of rubbing, you should at least make sure you are constantly sanitizing your hands.

Eat Healthily

One of the easy ways to keep your eyes healthy is by feeding them things that will strengthen and protect them. There are certain foods and nutrients that will help better than others, so best to make sure you are consuming those. Zinc, vitamins A and C, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, and several others are just some of the ones you should be getting. If you don’t think you are receiving enough of them in your daily diet, you could also take supplements.

Schedule Checkups

You cannot expect your eye to remain healthy if you are not regularly having them checked. Going to the eye doctor is something that needs to be routine for you. He will be able to tell you how things look and keep a record of what’s happening with your eyes. Most people are not a fan of going to the doctors, but you shouldn’t let that stop you from getting a routine eye exam every year.

Know History

If you are unfamiliar with your family’s eye history, you may want to look into it. Certain health problems could run in your family, causing you to be more prone to getting some eye diseases. If you know about them beforehand, you’ll be able to talk to your doctor and keep a lookout for them. You may be able to stop a problem before it happens because you knew it could be coming.

Although it’s not a popular thought that one needs to mentally think about keeping their eyes healthy, it should be. These are just a few of the ways you can do actually do it.
