Leading Cancer Center Delivers Faster, Smarter, More Connected Care

Providers get lab results faster, patients access care in real time, research runs smoother, and teams work seamlessly on one integrated system.

Verona, Wis., August 8, 2025 – Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) has completed one of the largest health IT transformations in oncology, uniting its entire care system through a single, fully integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) that connects patients, providers, researchers, and labs to deliver faster insights and better coordinated care.

Since February 1, 2025, more than 18,000 MSK staff across hospitals and outpatient centers have been working on the unified Epic EHR, giving care teams immediate access to patient histories, test results, and treatment plans—regardless of where care is provided.

Faster Answers When It Matters Most
For patients undergoing cancer treatment, timely lab results are critical. With MSK’s new EHR, results are automatically delivered to providers’ mobile devices, enabling near-instant response times. On average, providers now acknowledge results within three minutes—compared to 45 minutes when communicated by phone. This automation not only reduces the clerical workload for lab staff but also ensures providers have the information they need to make faster, better-informed decisions.

A Seamless Patient Journey
MSK has unified oncology treatment planning, lab operations, scheduling, and research participation into a single shared record. For patients moving between imaging, lab, and infusion in a single day, this integration creates a smoother, more coordinated care experience.

Digital Access for 100,000 Patients—From Day One
Ahead of the transition, MSK helped more than 100,000 patients enroll in MyChart so they could access their health information online immediately. Today, nearly 90% of patients actively manage their care digitally—checking results, confirming appointments, and securely messaging their care team.

Advancing Research Through eConsent
With more than 1,800 active studies and over 25,000 patients participating at any time, improving the research consent process has been a longstanding priority. MSK’s fully integrated eConsent workflows within Epic replace paper-based systems, reduce errors, and lessen administrative burden. Patients can now consent directly through MyChart, with automated features such as follow-up reminders for outdated consents. More than 80% of study consents are already completed electronically, and MSK is working to expand adoption further—including availability in over 20 languages.

At Epic’s 2025 Expert Group Meetings, MSK shared lessons from its large-scale eConsent rollout to help guide other organizations pursuing similar transformations.

Sharing What Works: MSK Supports Peers in Advancing Cancer Care

As a global leader in oncology, MSK is extending the benefits of its transformation to other institutions. In partnership with Epic, MSK contributed nearly 50 oncology-specific nurse triage protocols to Epic’s standard configuration, making them accessible across the Epic community. The center also hosts site visits to showcase its integrated lab workflows and coordinated operations.

At the 2025 Epic Users Group Meeting, MSK will lead sessions on topics including genetic risk assessments and the rapid delivery of critical results.
