LexisNexis Unveils New Medical Insights for Life Insurers

On November 11, 2025, LexisNexis Health Intelligence (RELX) introduced Medical Insights, a new capability that standardizes and extracts key data from electronic health records (EHRs).

The solution features a Clinical Screener that provides vitals, lab results, and clinical flags, along with an Impairment Identifier that highlights significant conditions with first-seen, recent, and resolution markers. According to the company, Medical Insights is designed to accelerate underwriting, retain more applicants in fast-track programs, reduce mortality slippage, deliver auditable data for rules engines, and integrate medical with non-medical data to enhance segmentation.

New EHR data extraction capability designed to accelerate life underwriting and deliver structured, auditable medical insights.
LexisNexis has launched Medical Insights as an enhancement to its Health Intelligence platform. The feature standardizes and extracts key EHR data fields—such as vitals, lab results, smoking status, and flagged impairments—and includes first-seen, most-recent, and resolution markers. By converting unstructured and varied EHR text into structured data, it enables seamless integration with rules engines and underwriting workflows, reducing manual review and helping keep more applicants in accelerated programs.

The potential benefits depend on three key factors: carriers incorporating the structured outputs into their automation and rules; maintaining auditable, applicant-disclosable data; and continued expansion of network coverage and analytics capabilities. The release also notes potential challenges, including dependency on EHR completeness and the need for operational integration, which may limit the near-term impact until carriers validate data quality and mapping in real-world use.

Key indicators to monitor include adoption rates among U.S. life insurers, measurable improvements in underwriting cycle times and accelerated program retention, and progress on network and analytics expansion— with early measurable outcomes expected within 12 months of rollout once integrated into underwriting pipelines.

Digital health solution built to redefine how medical data is used in life underwriting

ATLANTA, Nov. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — LexisNexis Risk Solutions has unveiled Medical Insights, a new feature within its LexisNexis® Health Intelligence platform. This enhancement standardizes and extracts vital information from electronic health records (EHRs), including key health data such as vitals, lab results, and significant medical conditions. By moving beyond traditional EHR summaries, Medical Insights enables U.S. life insurers to quickly identify critical risk factors, accelerate underwriting decisions, strengthen risk assessment, improve mortality outcomes, and advance rules-based automation through structured data.

“The introduction of Medical Insights from LexisNexis Health Intelligence marks a major advancement in how underwriting data is gathered and analyzed,” said Justin Baker, Associate Vice President of Life Underwriting Solutions at LexisNexis Risk Solutions. “Today, underwriters often have to manually review entire EHRs to identify key risk information. Life insurers need smarter tools to interpret large volumes of data, extract the most relevant insights, and form a complete view by bringing together information from multiple sources. With Medical Insights, we’re providing more comprehensive, structured, and auditable data that can also be disclosed to applicants and corrected when necessary.”

Core Features

  • LexisNexis® Health Intelligence – Clinical Screener: Provides key health data such as vitals, body build, common lab results, and smoking status, along with the latest readings, ranges, stability, and out-of-range alerts. This enables underwriting teams to triage applicants faster, make more consistent decisions, and retain more applicants in accelerated programs.
  • LexisNexis® Health Intelligence – Impairment Identifier: Highlights significant medical conditions with first-seen, most recent, and resolution indicators. This feature helps underwriters quickly assess whether a material impairment is active or resolved—eliminating the need to review the full medical record, saving time, and speeding decision-making.

Benefits

  • Enhance triage and acceleration programs: Medical Insights enable carriers to keep more applicants in accelerated underwriting programs by reducing cycle times, quickly identifying higher-risk cases, and improving the overall customer experience.
  • Reduce misrepresentation and mortality slippage: Medical Insights help prevent overlooked details from self-reported data or isolated exams, minimizing the risk of misrepresentation, undisclosed conditions, and hidden impairments.
  • Enable flexible automation: Medical Insights support underwriting automation at any stage by providing transparent, auditable data for integration into rules engines and predictive models. With more comprehensive details than single-source data like prescriptions or diagnosis codes, insurers can achieve more precise pricing and accurate mortality predictions at scale.
  • Integrate medical and non-medical data for deeper insights: When combined with LexisNexis® Risk Classifier, Medical Insights enhance risk segmentation, offering a more complete view of mortality risk.

“As life insurers move from traditional APS reports to real-time EHR data, the next step is turning that data into meaningful insights and combining medical and non-medical information to gain a complete view of risk,” said Baker. “We’re expanding our network and advancing analytics to ensure carriers receive more than just digital records—they gain actionable intelligence. The real value of EHRs extends far beyond replacing APS reports. Our goal is to deliver solutions that transform raw data into clear insights, helping insurers of all sizes accelerate decisions, refine segmentation, and drive digital transformation.”
