Light therapy which is also known as phototherapy or bright light therapy can be defined as the therapy which is use for the treatment of Seasonal Effective Disorder (SAD) by the help of artificial lights, use light boxes emitting full-spectrum light similar in composition to sunlight. Lights which are used in light therapy are brighter than indoor lights but not bright as sunlight. In this therapy, patients be seated in front of a specific light box for about 30 to 60 minutes a day, during the early fall until spring when outdoor light becomes strong enough to boost mood naturally.

Light therapy is used to affect brain chemicals linked to mood, easing SAD symptoms. Sleep disorders, other types of depression, and other conditions such as non-seasonal depression or insomnia which happened due to low exposure to sunlight can be reduced by the help of light therapy

There are another type of light therapy uses ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths mainly for treatment of the skin disorder psoriasis, as well as for a type of cancer known as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Light therapy also used for the treatment of jaundice in new born neonatal.
