The hospital is licensed for 14 inpatient acute care beds, all of which may be used as “swing beds” or skilled nursing beds to meet the needs of Medicare patients who need extra time to heal and strengthen following an acute care stay. In addition, area residents can also obtain a wide range of inpatient and outpatient health care services at the hospital minimizing the need to travel long distances for health care.
Culberson Hospital maintains Level IV Trauma Center designation, providing emergency services for the residents of Culberson and surrounding counties 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year. Through the hospital’s affiliation with Avera eCare, the services of local providers are complemented by those of board certified emergency room physicians and critical care nurses immediately available through telemedicine at the touch of a button.
Culberson Hospital, a 14-bed critical access hospital, was built for the community of Culberson County in 1970. Since that time the medical staff and employees of the hospital have been dedicated to providing quality healthcare while treating patients like family. The community has recently seen the importance of accessible healthcare close to home as well.
As part of a Texas state hospital district, the voters of Culberson County passed a $7.5 million bond issue in 2009 as an investment in their community to help fund a 14,500 sq. ft. hospital addition that opened in the summer of 2010. The focus of Culberson Hospital is to provide emergency, diagnostic and acute healthcare services. To accomplish this, the new hospital addition is equipped with a state-of-the-art emergency suite as part of its Level IV Trauma designated emergency room and 10 new patient rooms.
Although the community has always been supportive of the hospital and rural health clinic, it was not always a smooth ride for Culberson Hospital. In 2003 the hospital district board responded to some operating issues by applying for and receiving designation for conversion to a critical access hospital, rural health clinic and responsibility for the operations of the Culberson County EMS (emergency medical services).
Today, hospital operations are managed by Preferred Hospital Leasing Van Horn, a professional rural hospital management company. Preferred and the Culberson County Hospital District Board have enjoyed a successful partnership since 2004 and the upturn in financial stability has allowed Preferred to invest in the hospital with updated equipment and quality healthcare professionals to stabilize operations.
