Gibbs Cancer Center
The roots of Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute run deep in the Spartanburg community, from the time it was just the dream of two doctors to the world-class treatment and research center it has become today.
Recognizing that cancer patients’ needs are very specific, Drs. Jay Bearden and Julian Josey began in the early 1980′s by convincing administrators at the then Spartanburg Regional Hospital to allow them to consolidate all existing cancer treatment and support services into a dedicated, single-floor unit, a coordinated-services approach virtually unheard of at the time.
Soon, other physicians who shared an interest in cancer treatment – and who had professional connections in the world of regional and national cancer treatment – added their ideas and expertise to create an in-house tumor board, where a diverse group of specialists met to discuss the best treatment for each new cancer patient.
At Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute, we provide you with the friendliness and warmth of a community hospital and the advanced level of care you’d expect from an academic medical center. Every patient’s case is reviewed by teams of healthcare professionals that specialize in each patient’s specific type of cancer – these meetings are called multidisciplinary conferences. With our commitment to bringing together multiple specialists to create the best treatment plan for you, and our strong clinical research program, we’re delivering the highest standard of patient-centered cancer care to the entire Upstate South Carolina region.
Our numerous national certifications, including the Commission on Cancer designation, reflect the high standards of our entire cancer program.
To ensure that we develop the best possible cancer treatment plan for you, we hold weekly multidisciplinary conferences for multiple unique cancer programs. Working together, your cancer team evaluates imaging and lab results used to diagnose your cancer, they discuss other medical conditions that may affect your treatment, and they consider how they can best care for your physical and emotional well-being. Using their collective expertise, they develop a treatment plan designed to give you the best possible result. When appropriate, their discussion may also include clinical research trial options available through Gibbs.
