Inverness Medical Imaging

MRI is a painless imaging technique that uses a strong cylindrical-shaped magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create images inside the body. The strong magnetic field provides an environment in which harmless radio waves sent from the MRI to the patient’s body cause the protons in the latter to emit a radio frequency response back to the machine

CT scanning pairs traditional x-ray technology with a computer to create a detailed image of a person’s body in a very short amount of time.

A radiograph, also known as an x-ray, is a painless and non-invasive imaging procedure that uses ionizing radiation (x-rays) to produce an image of the inside of one’s body. X-rays are electromagnetic waves like radio waves or light waves, only stronger. They can pass through most objects, whereas light waves cannot.
Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, is a procedure that uses harmless high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of inside the body. The patient is not exposed to any radiation in an ultrasound exam. Ultrasound imaging is particularly useful because it allows for real-time imaging of the movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as fluids flowing through the body.
A mammogram is an imaging procedure that uses x-ray technology to detect abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammography plays an important part in the early detection of breast cancer. Please see our dedicated women’s section for more information.
Nuclear medicine is a form of molecular imaging that images organs and body functions through the emission of radioactive materials (radiopharmaceuticals) that are given to the patient. Using nuclear medicine, radiologists can evaluate kidney, cardiac, and thyroid function, and make diagnoses for various conditions, such as tumors and cancers, bone fracture, infection, and arthritis.
