OSF Saint Francis Medical Center

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, licensed for 616 beds and with a medical staff of more than 900 physicians, is one of the largest medical centers in the state of Illinois. A major teaching affiliate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, OSF Saint Francis is the area’s only Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, the highest level designated in trauma care. It serves as the resource hospital for emergency medical services for north central Illinois. OSF Saint Francis and Children’s Hospital of Illinois have been designated Magnet Status for excellence in nursing care since 2004.

Many tertiary services available at OSF Saint Francis aren’t available anywhere else in downstate Illinois. The Illinois Neurological Institute (INI) at OSF Saint Francis offers the most comprehensive and skilled team in downstate Illinois for brain and spine diseases, disorders and injuries. More than 30 neuroscience physicians excel in over 40 neurological specialties, such as diagnosis and treatment of stroke, aneurysm and AVM disease, epilepsy, spine disorders, neuromuscular and Parkinson’s disease. The growing radiosurgery center houses downstate Illinois’ first Gamma Knife and Varian Trilogy for treatment of brain and spine disorders without an incision. The INI has Illinois’ first primary stroke center certified by The Joint Commission, a multiple sclerosis center, a CARF-accredited neurorehabilitation program and clinical research. The INI is the clinical base for University of Illinois College of Medicine training programs in neurology, vascular neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology.

OSF Saint Francis Heart Hospital provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art services—from diagnostic testing to cardiovascular interventions and surgery. The Heart Hospital is the first hospital in Illinois to receive Joint Commission certification for heart attack care. Most recently, OSF Saint Francis Heart Hospital was the only hospital in the greater Peoria area to be named to the 2006 Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals by Solucient, a leading provider of patient quality information in the United States. OSF Saint Francis was one of only six Illinois hospitals recognized by Solucient and the only downstate teaching hospital.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF ILLINOIS

Children’s Hospital of Illinois is a 124-bed hospital housed on the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center campus. More than 115 pediatric specialists representing 40 pediatric subspecialties practice in the hospital. It’s the first Pediatric Critical Care Hospital in the state and serves as the primary pediatric teaching facility for the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Children’s Hospital is also designated as the area’s Regional Perinatal Center, with central Illinois’ only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit and Level I Trauma Center. Children’s Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital is also one of the Midwest’s top pediatric heart surgery programs. Children’s Hospital operates the Pediatric Surgery Center, which brings together 10 surgical specialties, including the only pediatric neuro and plastic surgeons pediatric ophthalmologist outside Chicago. Pediatric surgeons use robotic and minimally invasive surgery for pediatric patients, minimizing pain and shortening recovery time. Children’s Hospital of Illinois has been ranked among the top 1 percent of Neonatal Intensive Care Units and number one in patient satisfaction out of 45 national children’s health care facilities, staying committed to family-centered care.

HISTORY OF OSF SAINT FRANCIS MEDICAL CENTER

The story of OSF Saint Francis Medical Center began more than 130 years ago, in 1877, when six pioneering women arrived in Peoria. These Sisters soon formed their own religious community, The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, and began working with the sick and injured in this young, but growing, community on the banks of the Illinois River. The first hospital, located in a two-story frame house, was the start of today’s OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, a facility licensed for 616 beds with more than 6,000 employees and a medical staff greater than 900.
