Healthcare Hospitals

St Mary’s Healthcare

Today there is great pressure for maximum efficiency in healthcare delivery. While such efficiency is possible – we must vigilantly maintain patient care excellence while achieving it.

With the finest of medical staff, skillful hospital administration, and the ongoing financial support of our generous community, St. Mary’s proudly promises to continue offering the finest healthcare to all who come through its doors. Further, we promise to deliver our medical care with the compassion and respect for human dignity insisted upon by the founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

In the early years of the 20th century, Msgr. William Browne, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish saw the need for a Catholic Hospital in the City of Amsterdam. It was a time when industry was rapidly expanding in the city along the Mohawk and the carpet mills were flourishing. Immigrants from Italy, Poland and Lithuania were swelling the population of the city. With foresight and trust in God’s providence Msgr. Browne purchased a local mansion and requested that Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet come and establish St. Mary’s Hospital.

On April 19, 1903, five Sisters of St. Joseph opened the doors of St. Mary’s Hospital and began a ministry of healing and compassion. From this modest beginning St. Mary’s has grown to become a modern, mission driven health ministry. Our use of cutting-edge technology and expert staff enables us to drive costs and inefficiencies out of our system, while strengthening our ability to strategically plan for a stable, viable future. The times have brought many changes, but our dedication and mission remain the same today as when the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet first arrived in Amsterdam. Although there are changes in health care that continue to occur, our commitment to serving all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable remains.

In 2002 St. Mary’s, along with all the hospitals founded by the Sisters throughout the nation, became part of Ascension Health, the largest Catholic Healthcare System in the United States. Today, as a member of Ascension Health, St. Mary’s joins with over 80 other hospitals in a commitment to work toward Health Care that is Safe, Health Care that Works and Health Care that leaves no one behind, for life.

On June 1, 2009, St. Mary’s Hospital unified with Amsterdam Memorial Healthcare, combining two great traditions into one path to the future. This new entity became St. Mary’s Healthcare, a Catholic healthcare ministry dedicated to serving all people through a full continuum of health services. Our combined ministries allow us to develop new services and programs to meet the growing and changing needs of the community.
