Healthcare Hospitals

The Queens Health Systems

The Queen’s Medical Center, located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, is a private, non-profit, acute medical care facility. It is the largest private hospital in Hawaii, licensed to operate with 505 acute care beds and 28 sub-acute beds. The medical center has more than 3,000 employees and over 1,200 physicians on staff.

As the leading medical referral center in the Pacific Basin, Queen’s offers a comprehensive range of primary and specialized care services. Queen’s is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and affiliated with VHA Inc., the national health care alliance. The medical center is also approved to participate in residency training by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Queen’s began with a single hospital founded in 1859 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to address the health care needs of the people of Hawaii during a time when epidemics were sweeping the islands. They named the hospital The Queen’s Hospital, which became The Queen’s Medical Center in 1967. The Queen’s Health Systems was established in 1985 to provide expanded health care services and programs to the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin. Today, the Queen’s mission extends to four hospitals and 70 health care centers and labs throughout Hawaii and the Pacific.

Queen’s Vision: “To be the preeminent health care system of the Pacific, providing superior patient care that is continually advanced through education and research.” Company Overview The Queen’s Medical Center (QMC) was established in 1859 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV, and is an acute care medical facility accredited by The Joint Commission.

The facility is licensed for 575 acute beds and serves as the major tertiary and quaternary referral center for cancer, cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, orthopedics, surgery, emergency medicine and behavioral health medicine.
It is the state’s designated trauma center verified as Level I by the American College of Surgeons. It has the only organ transplantation program in Hawaii.

Queen’s is a major teaching hospital, serving as a clinical training site for the residency programs sponsored by the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.

Queen’s is the only hospital in Hawaii to achieve Magnet® status – the highest institutional honor for hospital excellence – from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
