May 26 : Summa Board Approves Recommendation to Implement Epic EMR

somerset medical center

Recently, Summa completed a comprehensive and thoughtful process to identify and select a single, unified Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system to implement across Summa Health System.

On March 27, the Summa Health System Board approved the recommendation to purchase and implement CHP’s version of Epic, allowing the System to move forward with this important initiative.

As a result, Summa will implement a version of Epic System’s EMR currently in use by Catholic Health Partners (CHP). We anticipate starting the project in July and will complete the roll-out by July 2016.

It is the most widely-used EMR in Ohio, which offers Summa collaborative options with other Epic-based healthcare systems in the state. Epic also is the EMR used by CHP, which provides Summa with additional support, experience and savings (time and money).

This project involves the following Summa entities: Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals (and connected facilities); Summa Barberton Hospital (and connected facilities); Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital (and connected facilities); Summa Physicians Inc. and NewHealth Collaborative.

The project also encompasses the following clinical functions:

  • Inpatient electronic medical record and clinician order entry
  • Ambulatory electronic medical record and clinician order entry
  • Clinical documentation – physician, nursing and ancillary
  • Patient portal
  • Pharmacy
  • Emergency department
  • Health information management – deficiency tracking and release of information
  • Hospital-based clinics (oncology, ophthalmology, internal medicine, family medicine, bariatrics)
  • Community connectivity
  • Population health management – using basic EMR capabilities
  • A data utility that allows the sharing of patient care information and quality results and also supports collaborative patient care improvement projects

We encourage physicians to:

  • Stay informed about the project
  • Watch for additional information and project updates
