Select the right EHR the  second time around !
This could well be the season of the EHR switch. Physicians who made a hasty or ill-informed choice, in the headlong rush to meet compliance parameters are taking corrective measures now. And the corrective measure is more often than not, changing their EHRs. Just the thought of going through the pressure of choosing an EHR again, is giving physicians a knot in the stomach.

Another checklist, another vendor, another horrible phase of convincing your staff that it is the best choice for your medical practice… Here is a little tip sheet that can help physicians arrive at a decision quickly and this time around not make a compromise!
1.Where did your previous EHR fall short ?
Make a list of the disappointments you faced with the earlier system.

  • Was it too complex ?
  • Did it take too long to load ?
  • Hated its clunky interface ?

Having a list will help you know what you are not looking for and also state to your vendors, in no uncertain terms, that this is the kind of system you’d avoid like the plague. It will put you in charge of the conversation. And once what you don’t want is out of the way, elucidate more clearly what you’re looking for.
2.Phase out the implementation process…
Ask for an incremental implementation of the EHR. Opting for a once and for all implementation of all EHR components will give lesser power in your hands. An incremental implementation where each module is installed over a period of time can help to a large extent in customizing the EHR system. There is minimal disruption to workflow and the entire implementation process is phased out.

Everybody in your medical practice gets more time to get a hang of the system before it takes your medical practice by storm!
3.Get a practice management system as a part of the package !
Never opt for an EHR that doesn’t have an integrated PMS. A wholesome EHR simplifies the implementation process, minimizes the number of interfaces, simplifies technical support and unifies your workflow.

It also means there is just one helpline to call on anytime you are stuck in a hard place!
4.Include your patients in the equation !
Most physicians forget about their patients in the hustle and bustle of implementing an EHR. But remember that it all boils down to one thing, better patient care. Your EHR should consist of a well-designed patient portal. If it doesn’t there is little point in making the switch at all !
