Medsphere Solves Client, VA Scheduling Challenges with New Solutions

Medsphere Systems Corporation, the leading provider of affordable and interoperable healthcare information technology (IT) solutions and services, today introduced a new Scheduler tool for the company’s electronic health records (EHRs). The Medsphere Scheduler will enable improved and integrated organizational function at client hospitals and physician practices by simply making the scheduling process more intuitive for patients and facility support staff.

The Scheduler effort demonstrates the flexibility and usefulness of public domain source code. Evolving from an application Medsphere originally created for a government client, Scheduler is now a core component in Medsphere’s inpatient OpenVista® and ambulatory ChartLogic EHRs. The same government project also animates work Medsphere contributed to the VistA Scheduling Enhancement (VSE) tool the VA is rolling out now to agency hospitals and clinics.

“An integrated scheduling tool streamlines facility functions and gives our clients a single EHR solution that provides much more than clinical support,” said Medsphere CEO Irv Lichtenwald. “The development of Scheduler is also a great example of how collaboration and repurposing code can save multiple millions of dollars for the federal government and the broader healthcare system. We’re quite proud of the impact we believe this project will have.”

The success of VSE at the VA is particularly noteworthy. Developed for the VA as an alternative to a proprietary solution that would cost roughly 25 times as much, VSE solves the much-publicized scheduling challenges that several years ago negatively impacted veteran care.

Medsphere’s relationship with the Indian Health Service (IHS), VA and commercial clients represents a uniquely innovative and cost-conscious approach to building better healthcare IT. With varied relationships that feed in-house development projects like Scheduler and VSE, as well as a subscription service payment model that makes comprehensive healthcare IT affordable to all, Medsphere endeavors to improve healthcare through IT without bankrupting individual facilities.

About Medsphere

Medsphere’s Government Services Division also applies that VistA expertise to development and testing projects for both VA and IHS.

Using a vendor-independent approach to helping hospitals solve critical challenges, the Phoenix Health Systems division provides a host of healthcare IT services, including systems implementation, project management, remote service desk, end-user device management, application management and IT leadership.
