Merck Manuals Integrates Authoritative Medical Information into the Allscripts Electronic Health Records Platforms

Kenilworth, N.J., September 25, 2017 – Merck Manuals, a comprehensive electronic medical reference, will now integrate its provider reference and patient education content into the Allscripts electronic health records (EHR) platforms: Allscripts Sunrise™, Allscripts Professional EHR™ and Allscripts TouchWorks® EHR.

Made seamlessly accessible by an HL7-compliant Infobutton, the materials are readily available to clinicians within the Allscripts EHR workflow. The Merck programs have automatically been authorized for all Allscripts clients and they simply need to activate the programs and enroll their users to make use of the Merck content.

“Partnering with Allscripts builds on our ongoing commitment to disseminate authoritative medical information through content-sharing arrangements with innovators in the healthcare sector,” said Michael Wisniewski, Strategic Partnership Manager for Merck Manuals. “We are continuously looking to build relationships with leading companies and other influential organizations that will expand the reach of our health information resources, which we make available to our partners at no charge.”

Clinical Decision-Making Support and Patient Education

The provider reference content contains current information on the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for hundreds of diseases.

Clinicians can share this same quality information written in language specifically for consumers. The patient education material can be electronically sent to patients through the Allscripts EHR platforms or printed out and handed to them.

By enabling clinicians to deliver understandable health information directly to consumers, Merck Manuals serves as a tool for improving patient education.

Merck Manuals content for providers and patients is available in English, Spanish, and eight additional languages.

The Merck Manuals

Merck & Co., Inc. published the original Merck Manual for doctors and pharmacists in 1899. The book for professionals is currently in its 19th edition.

The first edition of The Merck Manual of Medical Information, developed specifically to address the need for understandable medical information among consumers, was introduced in 1997. The book made The New York Times best-sellers list.

The digital offering at www.merckmanuals.com expands on the content in the books and is available as a public service to all at no cost.

There is no registration, and the user experience is not compromised by advertising or commercial messaging. More than 350 medical experts currently serve as contributors; all of the content is reviewed by an independent editorial board and regularly updated online.

Find more information about the Merck Manuals on the Allscripts Application Store. Health IT developers can create a free Allscripts Developer Portal account to access the Allscripts Open APIs and start building or connecting new innovations for Allscripts users.
