MYTHS ABOUT INCONTINENCE PADS FOR MEN BUSTED

Research reveals that only 15% of the men, compared to 87% of women, wore incontinence pads among people aged over 60 suffering from urinary incontinence. Some reasons for this could be the lack of awareness about its use, benefits, and comfort. But mainly, it could be a psychological barrier that keeps them from using the incontinence pads for men.

Most females are accustomed to using monthly pads to aid their menstrual cycle, and this gender association could make it uncomfortable for them. There are preconceived ideas about these ‘incontinence guards,’ which will be looked into here.

1) Men’s Incontinence Pads and Period Products are the Same

This is a common misconception about incontinence products. Although both pads are meant to hold liquid, manufacturers designed men’s incontinence pads with the capacity to collect and hold larger amounts of liquid-like urine for a longer period.

2) They Are Bulky and Uncomfortable to Wear

Incontinence pads contain a product called SAP or Super Absorbent Polymers that are tiny grain-like beads that feel like sand when they are dry. The usual pads with pulps can hold up to 20 times their weight, but the SAPs can hold up to 300 times their weight. This depends on the type of fluid absorbed. This makes SAP relatively thinner than other pads and hence more comfortable.

3) They Are Easily Noticeable

Men can wear incontinence pads discreetly under their clothes as they have a similar design of an undergarment. Trying one on would give potential users an idea about how they blend in with the clothing, like other underwear.

4) They Would Cause Discomfort and Skin Issues in the Long Term

The best incontinence pads from trusted websites are made of soft fabric and breathable top sheets to ensure maximum comfort. Even though the users might feel their presence initially, just like one gets accustomed to new shoes, they would become accustomed to the pads too. They contain a particular polymer that absorbs urine and an antiseptic, anti-bacterial coat to protect the wearer.

5) They Might Emit Bad Odour

Incontinence pads are designed with an intrinsic layer of odour that can be recognized. These layers of chemicals absorb the foul smell, like deodorants, and they get released when the product is wet. This ensures a comfortable wearing experience in public.

6) They Are Unhygienic and Unhealthy

Incontinence pads absorb the urine produced from a person and keep them from experiencing wetness throughout the day. It also protects them from developing urinary infections, foul smells, constant washes, etc., and allows them to move around and live a normal life. In addition, they are manufactured with anti-bacterial and anti-allergen material preventing a person from developing infections.

7) They Are Expensive in The Long Term

Having chronic incontinence means that the person might have to divert their expenses to buying protective incontinence pads. And people mostly opt for disposable ones, which could mean to be expensive. Reusable or washable incontinence pads are a better option to go for, which would be more economical in the long run.

8) One Size Fits All

This is not true as different incontinence pads for men are available in different sizes, shapes, and capacities to assist those in need. Some are also designed with external catheters, penile sheaths, and drainage condoms for their comfort.

The men who suffer from incontinence must consult their doctors and use incontinence pads to protect themselves and lead a normal life.
