Nov 20: CMS Seeks ‘Test EHRs’ To Help Providers Meet Stage 2

ipatientcare

CMS is seeking various test electronic health record systems that eligible physicians, hospitals and critical access hospitals can use to meet measure three of Meaningful Use Stage 2’s transitions of care objective, Clinical Innovation & Technology reports.

Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHR systems can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.

Under meaningful use Stage 2, eligible providers must either:

  • Successfully perform at least one electronic exchange of a summary of care document with a recipient using a different EHR technology; or
  • Successfully conduct at least one exchange test with a CM-designated test EHR during the EHR reporting period (Pedulli, Clinical Innovation & Technology, 11/18).

Participation Details

CMS has launched a new webpage explaining how developers’ products can become designated test EHRs (Durben Hirsch, FierceEMR, 11/13). The website lists the minimum set of technical capabilities for designation.

According to CMS, all designated EHR systems will register with a software system hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The group will randomly match providers with a designated test EHR that is different from their own to meet the transition-of-care objective
