ORIGINAL NEWS:

Smaller medical practices will now be able to tap into voice recognition technology thanks to a new version of Nuance Communication’s (Nasdaq:NUAN) Dragon Medical Practice.

The Burlington, Mass. Company on Wednesday released a new version of its natural voice language software designed for smaller practices. The new version was designed to help boost the clinical adoption of electronic health records. According to the company, for physicians in small practices, workflow speed and efficiency is hampered by the adoption of electronic health records.

The latest version, which was developed using the same Dragon Medical speech recognition technology currently in use by more than 180,000 physicians, makes it easier for doctors to document care into medical records using their voice, by enabling clinicians to both dictate the “medical decision-making” of patient visits and navigate through the EHR using speech.

According to the company, with up to 99 percent accuracy, physicians can dictate medical notes three times faster into an EHR, helping them save an average of 30 minutes a day.

It’s been a busy few months for Nuance. The deal comes on the heels of a partnership with Toyota Motors where the maker of natural language software Dragon Drive has been tapped by Toyota Motor Corp. to power the voice behind the automaker’s new smartphone app and the $80 million acquisition of Tweddle Group’s Tweddle Connect business, an application and content service delivery platform for in-car infotainment systems.
