Oct 23: Six keys to successful EHR implementation

genetic data

Implementing an EHR software is one of the most important decisions related to a medical practice. It involves changing the entire practice workflows to accommodate electronic records and plenty of training for the staff. However, not all practices are able to handle this complex and time consuming task easily. Let’s try to give you a few tips through which you will be able to implement your EHR software easily.

Product selection

First of all, you need to select your product. Do a detailed market survey of all available EHR solutions based on revenue enhancement, quality of care, operational efficiency, compliance, risk and liability etc. You need to understand which areas will have the most significant impact on your practice workflows.

Prepare for change

One of the most important areas before implementing an EHR software is to gear your staff up for the big change. Managing the entire change process well will ensure that your system is deployed successfully and is received well by your employees.

Cost/revenue analysis

You will also require to do a detailed cost and revenue analysis before selecting your EHR vendor. See how much it is going to cost you with hardware/software, implementation and training, maintenance and support. You should also keep in mind how much it is going to benefit you in terms of revenue over an extended period of time.

Project plan for your practice

It is very important to develop a final project plan that is customized for your practice. Remember, success of your EHR implementation largely depends on the project plan you make. Identify the people, processes and policies that are going to be involved in this process. In addition, make a comprehensive plan comprising of preliminary training, project management, rehearsals, go-live and transition to support.

Implement EHR

After you have done all the hard work, it is time for you to implement the EHR software for your practice and make it work. There will be problems in the beginning, but these will be ironed out with the passage of time and practice.

Measure and celebrate success

Once everything is put in place, you should then measure your practice’s workflows by doing a quantitative analysis which should tell you whether or not you have saved time and money by implementing an EHR system

These were a few key areas that you should keep in mind in order to succeed while implementing an EHR software
