Patient Records Go Digital to Enhance Care Coordination

EMR Industry

All patient records at Northampton General Hospital (NGH) are set to go digital as part of a major initiative to modernize patient care.

The new Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system, developed by Nervecentre, will go live on Saturday, 28 June. It aims to consolidate all patient notes and information into a single, secure digital format.

William Monaghan of NGH called the launch a “pivotal moment” and expressed hope that the system will lead to “safer, more coordinated care.”

A hospital spokesperson stated that the new electronic system will allow clinical teams to access real-time patient information, enabling them to make quicker, safer, and better-informed decisions.

Transition to a Digital Platform

Currently, patient records are managed through a mix of paper and digital systems. These will now be replaced by a centralized, streamlined digital platform designed to boost efficiency and eliminate duplication.

William Monaghan, Group Chief Digital Information Officer, described the rollout as a “pivotal moment” for Northampton General Hospital (NGH) and its patients.

“The new EPR system places critical information directly in the hands of our clinical teams, supporting the delivery of safer, more coordinated care,” Monaghan said. “Although we anticipate some initial teething issues, this digital transformation will significantly enhance our operations, allowing staff to spend more time on what matters most—patient care.”

Improved Access and Patient Experience

As part of the rollout, staff will use secure, hospital-issued mobile devices such as tablets and iPhones at patients’ bedsides. This will enable them to access up-to-date medical information instantly, reduce administrative burden, avoid repeatedly asking patients for their medical history, and strengthen collaboration between departments and services.

The hospital also confirmed that all patient information will be securely protected.
