Pharmacy Management Software Leader Releases New Integration to Empower Pharmacists Fighting the Misuse of Scheduled Drugs

Integration to Empower Pharmacists

BestRx, a software solutions company whose mission is to deliver affordable, easy-to-use, tailored pharmacy software solutions that address the unique demands of independent community pharmacies, is announcing an integration that allows pharmacies to access prescription drug monitoring program registries in workflow.

Prescription drug misuse and abuse affects people across all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 16,000 people per year die from a painkiller overdose. All 50 states now have PDMPs in place to track the distribution of scheduled prescription drugs. PDMP registries help health authorities identify problematic prescription drug behaviors and aid in education, research, enforcement and abuse prevention. Cutting down on so-called doctor shopping and enabling easier secure data access for professionals remain key issues for some states. The states databases are cumbersome for pharmacists to access outside of their workflow, requiring that patient data be queried and updated from a separate interface than that used to fill patients’ prescriptions.

With the help of Appriss Health and LogiCoy, BestRx’s PDMP integrates real-time PDMP data and provides patients’ controlled substance medication histories to the vast majority of state registries. Pharmacies using the BestRx Pharmacy Management system have free access to this integration. The tool integrates state PDMP data into pharmacists’ workflows at the point of care — the automated access of patient data reduces errors and shaves time off of reporting activities. Additionally, the tool maintains an audit log that captures the user, date and time of PDMP registry data access and verification.

BestRx President Hemal Desai said: “Opioid-related addictions and overdoses have become an epidemic in our nation, and pharmacists are on the front line when it comes to battling this crisis. BestRx is dedicated to providing their users the tools to help combat opioid abuse, and that’s why we made integration with these PMP registry look-ups a priority for our system.”
