Practice Fusion Shares ICD-10 Switch Results

ICD-10

Practice Fusion, the No. 1 cloud-based health platform, today shared details on the success of its ICD-10 switch with community medicine practices across the U.S. The platform officially moved to the new medical billing protocol on October 1, becoming the largest ICD-10 equipped healthcare community in the U.S. overnight.

Practice Fusion has seen community healthcare professionals chart one million patient visits with the ICD-10 system in place over the past week. The most used ICD-10 codes on the Practice Fusion platform so far have been essential (primary) hypertension (I10), type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications (E11.9), hyperlipidemia, unspecified (E78.5), low back pain (M54.5), and anxiety disorder, unspecified (F41.9) — reflecting the primary care focus of the company’s community and the prevalence of chronic disease in the U.S.

Training materials and coding tools were provided to assist physicians making the transition, helping them to find the most appropriate ICD-10 codes quickly. The company surveyed its community of healthcare professional users before and after the ICD-10 switch:

  • In the weeks leading up to the switch, 18% of healthcare professionals felt prepared for the transition, and 61% felt unsure.
  • 64% of users reported that Practice Fusion’s ICD-10 search function made it “easy” or “very easy” to identify the new codes.
  • Only 17% of healthcare professionals reported that they found the overall ICD-10 transition “very disruptive” to their practice.

The American Medical Association recently estimated that small medical practices would be charged as much as $60,000 to upgrade their software in preparation for ICD-10. This is the third time that Practice Fusion has helped its cloud-based medical community meet the needs of a major regulatory change at no cost. The company launched Meaningful Use Stage 1 systems in June 2011 and Stage 2 in 2014, helping practices earn more than $150 million in incentives.

“Cloud-based technology is exactly what the doctor ordered for a big change like ICD-10,” said Tom Langan, CEO of Practice Fusion. “Thanks to our web-based platform, Practice Fusion was able to update all our medical practices with the ICD-10 system with minimal disruption. We are proud to have helped community medicine doctors across the country save thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of work while embracing this modern coding system.”

Practice Fusion offers medical practices a flexible marketplace of web- and desktop-based billing software, billing services, and revenue cycle management services, including ADP AdvancedMD, NeuMD, and CollaborateMD.

Learn more about Practice Fusion’s unique approach to ICD-10 in The Journal of AHIMA and in this video with family medicine physician Dr. Lamia Kadir. To speak with a Practice Fusion ICD-10 leader or a community medical practice that has made the switch, please email media@practicefusion.com.
