ORIGINAL NEWS:

River’s Edge Hospital will move to a full electronic records system after the St. Peter City Council approved the $2.7 million purchase of software.

“By 2015 all hospitals in the nation will have to be on an operable medical records system,” said Hospital CEO Colleen Spike. Those that fail to do so will be penalized in their Medicare reimbursement.

The system will put three types of records onto the electronic system.

“There are the electronic medical records and the financial management system and our HR system. So all three will integrate into the same system,” Spike said.

The software and support will come from Lawson Software in St. Paul.

She said the billing system will begin being changed over this year with much of the medical records system operating later next year. She said the change will take some adjustment by everyone.

“You have physicians and staff that are used to paper management, and now everything will be electronic.”

The city-owned hospital and clinic will pay for the system from the depreciation fund for River’s Edge.
