Sheba Medical Center’s Innovative Minimally Invasive Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Boasts Revolutionary 99% Healing Rate and 100% Aesthetic Satisfaction in Children

excel

Dr. David Mishaly, the Director of the Pediatric and Congenital Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Sheba Medical Center, has invented a revolutionary minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat congenital heart defects in children, which boasts a 99% healing rate and 100% aesthetic satisfaction. Dr. Mishaly is the only doctor in the world performing this type of surgery, which requires the utmost level of skill and expertise.

Congenital heart defects (CHD), also referred to as congenital heart anomaly, is a defect found in the structure in the heart that can be detected at birth.

While most conventional treatments may include invasive surgical procedures, Sheba Medical Center has successfully implemented Dr. Mishaly’s minimally invasive surgical technique in young patients.

The minimally invasive procedure is performed via a small (4cm) incision under the patient’s right breast. This allows for minimal scarring as the child matures – the small scar remains hidden under the future breast. When compared to conventional open-heart surgery, the recovery process is much simpler, the central chest area is left intact, the aesthetic result is considerably more appealing and the overall medical outcomes are not compromised.

The cause of a congenital heart defect is often unknown, but may be genetic, environmental or a combination of both. The defect may involve the walls of the heart, the valves of the heart or the arteries and veins near the heart.

Signs and symptoms in newborns may include rapid breathing, cyanosis (bluish tint to the skin, lips and fingernails), fatigue and poor blood circulation. The department’s main focus is in making the correct diagnosis, followed by the best-available surgical treatment for congenital heart defects through the use of state-of-the-art technology.

The Department of Pediatric and Congenital Cardiothoracic surgery places a great emphasis on the human facet; a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Cardio-thoracic surgeons, Cardiologists, Pediatricians, Anesthetists, and Intensive Care Unit staff provides around-the-clock care. Additionally, the team accompanies the child and family before, during and after the surgery.

As the only medical center in the world to offer this procedure, Sheba’s philosophy is to enable every infant and child to take advantage of its knowledge and expertise in order to receive the best surgical treatment, regardless of cost or nationality.
